The Trail Fusion (Trail Roc Fusion in the LOOK catalogue) takes the silhouette of the Trail Roc+ in a much more affordable injected composite version. Its 107 x 105 mm concave platform offers, according to LOOK, 25% more contact area than a traditional pedal. Its 8 metal pins per side, whose layout was developed with rider Thomas Genon, lock the sole in place through rough sections. At just 18 mm thick, it skims over rocks and roots in corners.
The Trail Roc+ is its forged aluminium big sister: 10 pins per side, 16 mm thick and a more precise feel, for around 395 g per pair. The Trail Fusion bets on composite: two fewer pins, 2 mm more height, but featherweight and at a much friendlier price. For a first move to pinned flats, a second bike or a rider who batters their pedals on rocks, it's the rational choice. If you'd rather have a pinless flat for riding in trainers, look at the Trail Grip and its Vibram inserts.
The bearing can be removed via the three-lug cap: cleaning and regreasing after a muddy winter significantly extends its life. Regularly inspect the pins, especially those on the leading edge that take the impacts, and replace them as soon as they're bent or torn out. As for shoes, choose a flat MTB sole in soft rubber: that's what really gets the most out of the pins.
