Designed like a race bike that has left the tarmac, the Trek Checkmate SLR 9 AXS combines an OCLV 800 Series carbon frame, a wireless SRAM RED XPLR AXS 1x13 groupset and 42 mm tyres, weighing 7.55 kg in size ML. Its race geometry and one-piece cockpit will feel instantly familiar to riders coming from the road. The Trek Black/Juniper Splatter finish scatters juniper-green splashes over a deep black.

For the experienced road cyclist, used to fast club rides, who wants to discover gravel without giving up the feel of a responsive bike. It will suit those who plan their routes half on the back roads of the hinterland, half on the white tracks between the vineyards around Béziers.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. The OCLV process, used by Trek since 1992, presses the fibre sheets under heat and pressure to eliminate micro-voids. On the Checkmate SLR, Trek uses the 800 Series: an optimised lay-up that produces a painted frame of 1,146 g in ML, stiff enough to handle out-of-the-saddle efforts on a broken track. Like all OCLV frames, it benefits from Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 800 (Checkmate SLR) | OCLV 500 (Checkpoint SL) | OCLV 900 (Madone / Domane SLR) | |
| Level | Trek's top-tier gravel | Entry-level carbon | Trek's most refined carbon |
| Construction | Optimised lay-up, little superfluous material | Same process, more generous lay-up | 3D moulding, fewer overlaps |
| Reference bike | Checkmate SLR 9 AXS: 7.55 kg (ML) | Checkpoint SL 7 AXS: 9.33 kg (ML) | Reserved for SLR road bikes |
| What it means | Frame + fork 1,561 g, race geometry | Frame + fork 1,921 g, adventure mounts | Up to 20% stronger than OCLV 800 |
In short: the SLR 9 AXS frame is the same as on every Checkmate SLR, and it is the spec that makes the difference. The RED XPLR, the RSL wheels and the AirLoom saddle account for most of the 920 g gap with the SLR 7 AXS; as for OCLV 900, Trek keeps it for its road bikes.
The biggest shock for a roadie switching to gravel is the tyres: 42 mm at low pressure instead of 28 mm pumped up hard. The Checkmate's Girona RSL tyres stay fast on tarmac thanks to their supple casing, while offering the grip you need on loose gravel; a few rides are enough to find the right pressure.
Another difference is the single chainring: the 42-tooth ring replaces the double chainset and the 10-46 cassette makes up for it with bigger jumps between sprockets. The frame keeps a removable front derailleur mount, which leaves the door open to a double drivetrain; we can look at this kind of build in our workshop if your riding stays very road-focused.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Checkpoint SL 7 AXS | OCLV 500 | SRAM Force XPLR AXS 1x13 | Carbon Aeolus Elite 35V | 9.33 kg (ML) |
| Checkmate SLR 7 AXS | OCLV 800 | SRAM Force XPLR AXS 1x13 + power meter | Carbon Aeolus Pro 3V | 8.47 kg (ML) |
| Checkmate SLR 9 AXS | OCLV 800 | SRAM RED XPLR AXS 1x13 + power meter | Carbon Aeolus RSL 37V | 7.55 kg (ML) |
| Boone 5 (cyclocross) | OCLV 600 | SRAM Apex 1x12 | Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 | 8.50 kg (56) |
Our take: for a roadie, the SLR 9 AXS offers the feel closest to a race bike; the SLR 7 AXS keeps the same geometry for 920 g more, and the Boone 5 is aimed at entirely different terrain, that of cyclocross.

LVR sizing advice Race geometry: if you are between two sizes, the smaller one gives a livelier bike in tight corners, the larger one more stability on fast descents. The one-piece bar-stem cannot be adjusted for length, which is why a bike fit before purchase is worthwhile.

| Fast enough on the road? | Yes, with a slight gap due to the 42 mm tyres; narrower tyres are easy to fit. |
| Is a double chainset possible? | The front derailleur mount is removable; the project is confirmed in the workshop. |
| What tyre pressure? | It depends on your weight and the terrain; we give you a starting point when you collect the bike. |
| Which sizes? | Six sizes, from XS to XL, for riders from 143 to 203 cm. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The ideal gravel bike for a demanding roadie who wants to extend their rides onto the tracks without losing responsiveness. The black flecked with juniper green looks understated from a distance and original up close.
