The LVR workshop view

Belt drive, big battery and standard frame. This version of the Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 combines the 800 Wh PowerTube and the Gates CDX belt drive in a classic Alpha Platinum aluminium frame, from M to XL. The Nexus hub protects its 5 gears from dust and rain, and the battery slots in through the top of the down tube.

In short: the longest-range belt-drive Charter+ with a standard frame, quoted by Trek at 32.50 kg in size L. It's aimed at long daily commutes, when you want to charge less often and never grease a chain.

On a long daily commute, every minute of maintenance saved counts: the belt needs no grease, the hub is forgotten, and the 800 Wh battery spaces out the charges. It's the combination that demands the least attention in the entire standard-frame Charter+ range.

The Nexus hub lets you shift down at a standstill, at lights or a stop sign, and pull away directly in the right gear. The Bosch smart system battery comes out through the top of the down tube for charging at the office or at home.

Our take: 32.50 kg in L is 0.90 kg more than the standard-frame Nexus 5 540 Wh, for an extra 260 Wh. With a derailleur and a Trail chassis, the standard-frame Trail 800 Wh weighs 30.70 kg in L.
