For the urban rider who stops at every junction and wants to pull away smoothly, without ever being in the wrong gear. It will suit anyone who finds conventional gears confusing or tiring.
Enviolo: the right ratio, with no steps. This Charter+ 4 Lowstep hands its drivetrain over to an Enviolo City continuously variable hub, driven by a Gates CDX CenterTrack belt. There are no gears in the conventional sense any more: you vary the ratio smoothly, like a slider. The low step-over Alpha Platinum frame keeps its integrated mudguards and rack.
| Shimano CUES derailleur | Nexus 5 hub + belt | Enviolo hub + belt | |
| How it works | 9 sprockets and a Linkglide chain | 5 gears enclosed in the hub | Continuously variable, no steps |
| Maintenance | Chain needs cleaning and lubing | Grease-free belt, sealed hub | Grease-free belt, sealed hub |
| Reference bike | Charter+ 4 R9, 30.80 kg (M, 540 Wh) | Charter+ 4 Nexus 5, 30.60 kg (M, 540 Wh) | Charter+ 4 Enviolo, 31.60 kg (M, 540 Wh) |
| What it means | Widest gear range | Shifts at a standstill, clean | The ideal gear at any moment |
In short: the Charter+ 4 Enviolo 540 Wh Lowstep is for those who want a smooth ride, with no jolts and no chain maintenance. Trek quotes 31.60 kg in size M, 1 kg more than the Nexus 5 version.
With an Enviolo hub, there are no numbered gears: you twist the shifter and the ratio changes progressively, with no clicks or jumps. As you approach a set of lights on the Allées Paul Riquet, you select a low ratio, even at a standstill, and pull away without a jolt.
The Gates CDX CenterTrack belt, guided by a central groove, can't derail and needs no grease. The 2.40-inch E6 Hard-Case Lite tyres and the 63 mm coil fork soak up the cobbles and road joints of the town centre.
| Model | Motor / battery | Drivetrain | Fork | Weight (size) |
| Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 belt 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Nexus 5 + belt | 63 mm coil | 30.60 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Enviolo belt 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Enviolo City + belt | 63 mm coil | 31.60 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Enviolo belt 800 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 800 Wh | Enviolo City + belt | 63 mm coil | 32.50 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 5 Auto 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line PX 90 Nm / 540 Wh | Automatic Enviolo + belt | Mobie 34 air 80 mm | 30.60 kg (M) |
Our take: 31.60 kg in M, which is 1 kg more than the Nexus 5 540 Wh Lowstep, for a stepless drivetrain. The Charter+ 5 Auto 540 Wh (30.60 kg) makes the choice of ratio automatic and moves up to the PX motor.

LVR sizing advice You get onto the Lowstep frame from the front, without lifting your leg: the size is chosen mainly on saddle height and reach. Trek's ranges overlap between M and L (170 to 173 cm); in that case, the smaller size gives a more upright position and the larger one more room for long rides. The height-adjustable stem then fine-tunes the position.
