For bike tourers who head off for several days with panniers and want a drivetrain that asks nothing of them on the road. It also suits long weekend rides.
Continuously variable gearing and touring range. This Charter+ 4 brings together the Enviolo City hub, the Gates CenterTrack belt and the 800 Wh PowerTube in the step-through Alpha Platinum aluminium frame. The ratio adjusts without steps, the belt never needs greasing, and the big battery needs charging less often. It's the most refined Charter+ 4 in terms of drivetrain comfort.
| Shimano CUES derailleur | Nexus 5 hub + belt | Enviolo hub + belt | |
| How it works | 9 sprockets and a Linkglide chain | 5 gears enclosed in the hub | Continuously variable, no steps |
| Maintenance | Chain needs cleaning and lubing | Grease-free belt, sealed hub | Grease-free belt, sealed hub |
| Reference bike | Charter+ 4 R9, 30.80 kg (M, 540 Wh) | Charter+ 4 Nexus 5, 30.60 kg (M, 540 Wh) | Charter+ 4 Enviolo, 31.60 kg (M, 540 Wh) |
| What it means | Widest gear range | Shifts at a standstill, clean | The ideal gear at any moment |
In short: the top of the Charter+ 4 range, weighed by Trek at 32.50 kg in size M. It's designed for riders who string together long journeys and want a quiet, clean bike with no derailleur adjustment.
On a tour, a chain quickly gets grimy on dusty tracks and needs greasing at each stop. The Gates belt and the sealed Enviolo hub remove that chore: you can ride for several days without touching the drivetrain.
When loaded with panniers, it's nice to fine-tune the ratio to the gradient: the Enviolo's continuously variable gearing makes that possible, down to half a turn of the shifter. The 800 Wh battery is charged in the evening at your accommodation with the Bosch charger.
| Model | Motor / battery | Drivetrain | Fork | Weight (size) |
| Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 belt 800 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 800 Wh | Nexus 5 + belt | 63 mm coil | 31.50 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Enviolo belt 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Enviolo City + belt | 63 mm coil | 31.60 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Enviolo belt 800 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 800 Wh | Enviolo City + belt | 63 mm coil | 32.50 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 5 Auto 800 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line PX 90 Nm / 800 Wh | Automatic Enviolo + belt | Mobie 34 air 80 mm | 31.50 kg (M) |
Our take: 32.50 kg in M, which is 0.90 kg more than the Enviolo 540 Wh for an extra 260 Wh. The Nexus 5 800 Wh Lowstep (31.50 kg) is 1 kg lighter, with 5 fixed gears.

LVR sizing advice You get onto the Lowstep frame from the front, without lifting your leg: the size is chosen mainly on saddle height and reach. Trek's ranges overlap between M and L (170 to 173 cm); in that case, the smaller size gives a more upright position and the larger one more room for long rides. The height-adjustable stem then fine-tunes the position.
