Trek Domane SL 7 Gen 4: top-of-the-range SL for smaller riders

Offered here from 44 to 52, the Trek Domane SL 7 Gen 4 is aimed at riders from 150 to 168 cm who want a complete bike with no compromise on equipment. It features the OCLV Series 500 carbon frame with rear IsoSpeed, Ultegra Di2 2x12 and Aeolus Pro 51 carbon wheels, for a claimed weight of 8.42 kg in size 56. Its Ivy Smoke paint, a smoky ivy green, looks elegant in sunshine and grey weather alike.

Who is it for?

For the smaller rider who covers a lot of miles and no longer wants to settle for an entry-level bike for lack of a suitable size, for the climber preparing for a mountain sportive, or for anyone who wants top-end electronics on a comfortable frame. Sizes 44 and 47 come with a 36 cm bar and 165 mm cranks.

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. The acronym refers to an in-house moulding technique used since 1992: by pressing and heating the fibres, Trek reduces to a minimum the internal voids that would weaken the frame. The series number reflects how efficient the layup is; the higher it climbs, the less material is needed to reach the target stiffness. This Domane comes with the Trek lifetime warranty on the frame.

On a small frame, a well-matched cockpit matters as much as the carbon: here, handlebar, stem and cranks follow the size, with a 60 mm stem in 44 and 90 mm in 52. The electronic Ultegra Di2 shifters need very little force, a real advantage for small hands on the long descents of the Caroux.

The 51 mm rims are fast, but a light rider will feel them more when the sea wind or the tramontane blows in gusts; that is the only thing to bear in mind. During the bike fit, we adjust saddle setback and bar height, which often does more for comfort than changing equipment.

Our take: the SL 7 Gen 4 keeps IsoSpeed, integrated storage and Ultegra Di2 in 2x12; the Gen 5 SL 7 AXS 1x moves to SRAM 1x13 with a power meter, weighs 8.14 kg in ML against 8.42 kg in 56 and takes 40 mm tyres. Compared with the SL 6 Gen 4, you save 470 g and get deeper rims.
