Trek Domane AL 4 matte black: the all-season training bike

The Trek Domane AL 4 Gen 4 is the range's solid training base: Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame, carbon fork, Shimano Tiagra 2x11 and 10.10 kg in size 56. Its mudguard mounts let you ride all year round without taking the race bike out in doubtful weather. In Matte Dark Star Black, a deep matt black, it keeps a low profile and quickly hides road grime.

Who is it for?

For the club rider who wants a winter bike with a proper drivetrain, the racer who spares their carbon bike during the wet months, or anyone who rides alone several times a week whatever the weather. It remains lively enough for spring rides.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. Under the Domane AL 4, Trek uses its Alpha Series 100 alloy, chosen to withstand everyday use and accept mudguards, a top tube bag or wider tyres. The fork is carbon, steerer included, which softens the steering on rough surfaces. Universal UDH derailleur hanger and thru axles: spare parts are easy to find, a detail that matters on the day of a crash.

The key point: at this level of the range, the weight difference with Alpha 300 comes down to tube design and mounts, not to a difference in quality. In return, Alpha 100 accepts winter equipment, which the Émonda ALR doesn't cater for.

A training bike has to soak up the miles without demanding attention: the Tiagra 2x11 is precise and consistent, and the LG500 chain copes well with intensive use. The thru axles keep the rotors perfectly aligned, which prevents pad rub once the wheel is refitted.

With mudguards, the AL 4 takes midweek rides on the road to Murviel-lès-Béziers or intervals on the long straights of the Orb plain in its stride, even into the sea wind. We recommend a drivetrain clean at the end of winter and regular pad checks in wet weather.

Our take: as a training bike, the AL 4 has the edge over the AL 2 thanks to its 11 speeds and 250 g less; the AL 5, at 9.80 kg in size 56, is only justified if you also want to race on the same bike.

LVR sizing advice

If you are unsure, the smaller size gives livelier steering, the larger one more stability on long descents. Cranks, handlebar and stem follow the size.
