Trek Domane SLR 9: Dura-Ace for every road

The Trek Domane SLR 9 Gen 5 is the most refined Shimano Domane: OCLV Series 900 frame, Dura-Ace Di2 2x12, Aeolus RSL 51 carbon wheels and 7.34 kg in size ML. It takes on the roads race bikes avoid: worn surfaces, patched-up country roads, stretches of gravel track. The Matte Deep Smoke colourway dresses it in a very dark smoky grey with a matt finish, discreet and easy to live with day to day.

Who is it for?

For the cyclist who prefers the small roads of the hinterland to the main routes and doesn't want to pick their routes according to the state of the tarmac. It will appeal to the rider who rides all year round, with mudguards in winter, and is looking for a single high-end bike that can do everything on the road.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. The OCLV principle hasn't changed since its beginnings in 1992: compact the carbon layers under heat and pressure to eliminate micro-voids, the weak points of a frame. What evolves is the level of refinement. The OCLV 900 of the SLR 9 is made by rigid 3D moulding, with fewer overlap zones: the Domane frame thus loses about 220 g compared with OCLV 500 and gains up to 20 % in strength over the previous OCLV 800, a welcome toughness when the road is rough. With an equal frame, the 320 g saved over the SLR 7 come from the RSL wheels and Dura-Ace.

On the battered roads of the Haut-Languedoc, this frame without IsoSpeed relies on the round 27.2 mm carbon post, which flexes over every bump, and on 35 mm tyres. There is room up to 40 mm without mudguards: enough to move to a wider tyre for mixed rides, keeping the same drivetrain.

Dura-Ace R9250 Di2 keeps a 50/34 and an 11-34 cassette, classic sportive gearing, with crisp shifts even under load. At every service, our workshop updates the Di2 system; the threaded T47 bottom bracket makes bearing replacement simple.

Our take: with an identical frame, the SLR 9 weighs 320 g less than the SLR 7 (7.34 against 7.66 kg) thanks to Dura-Ace and RSL wheels. The SLR 9 AXS saves only 50 g more, but adds a power meter and a 48/35 that is easier on climbs.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes: the smaller one if you lack flexibility, the larger one if you have a long torso. Handlebar, stem and cranks follow the size.
