For the cyclist leaving an aluminium bike behind who wants a taste of carbon without complications, the rider who prefers a cable drivetrain that can be adjusted anywhere, or the regular cyclist who heads out two or three times a week. The upright position puts you at ease quickly, even after several years away from road cycling.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Behind the OCLV acronym lies an in-house process launched by Trek in 1992: each part is put under pressure and then cured to drive out the air trapped between the plies, the main source of weakness in carbon. The number that goes with the name (500, 900) tells you how refined the layup is; the higher it goes, the fewer fibres the frame needs for equivalent stiffness. These frames are covered by a Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | |
| Level | Entry-level carbon of the road range | Trek's most advanced carbon |
| Construction | Robust layup, slightly more material | Rigid 3D moulding, fewer fibre overlaps |
| Gen 5 Domane frame | approx. 1,055 g | approx. 835 g (unpainted, size ML) |
| What it means | Tough, comfortable frame, more affordable price | About 220 g less on the frame; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800 |
Trek's entry-level carbon is no botched compromise: same process, just a little more material than the top-end version. For a first carbon frame, it above all promises a lively, durable bike.
Mechanical Shimano 105 remains a safe bet: twelve speeds at the back, no battery to charge and adjustments every workshop knows. With a 50/34 chainset and 11-34 cassette, the gearing is classic and suits the climbs of the hinterland around Béziers as well as the long straight roads to the sea.
The 23 mm wide Paradigm alloy rims take knocks well and accept tubeless; they also account for the extra 200 g compared with the SL 6 AXS. The day you want more liveliness, carbon wheels will be the first upgrade we recommend.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Domane SL 5 | OCLV 500 | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg |
| Domane SL 6 AXS | OCLV 500 | SRAM Rival AXS wireless | Carbon 50 mm | 8.64 kg |
| Domane SL 7 AXS 1x | OCLV 500 | SRAM Force XPLR 1x13 + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 8.14 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 7.66 kg |
Our take: the SL 5 weighs 8.84 kg against 8.64 kg for the SL 6 AXS: those 200 g come mainly from the wheels. If you want simple, reliable carbon, it is all you need; if wireless shifting tempts you, the SL 6 AXS is the next step.
