Domane SL 6 AXS white and black: a carbon bike for the whole year

With its two-tone Matte Era White/Deep Smoke finish, white and smoky black with a matt feel, this Trek Domane SL 6 AXS is aimed at riders who don't put their bike away in November. Its OCLV Series 500 carbon frame accepts mudguards and tyres up to 40 mm, and the SRAM Rival AXS 2x12 drivetrain has no derailleur cables to seize up in the rain. It weighs 8.64 kg in size ML, before accessories.

Who is it for?

For the rider who rides twelve months a year and wants just one bike for winter and summer alike, the fan of the coarse roads of the Minervois or gravel tracks between villages, and the sporty long-distance commuter. With mudguards, it remains a true carbon bike; without, it ventures onto fast gravel tracks.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek has been developing its OCLV carbon since 1992: the fibre layers are compacted under heat and pressure to drive out the micro-voids that weaken a frame. The series number indicates how optimised the layup is: the higher it is, the less material is needed to achieve the same stiffness and strength. OCLV carbon frames benefit from the Trek lifetime warranty.

For all-season use, OCLV 500 even has an argument in its favour: a slightly more generous layup, so a frame that takes gravel and repeated everyday handling in its stride.

Mudguard mounts are provided: once fitted in the workshop, the mudguards limit tyre width to 35 mm, exactly the stock tyres, so nothing needs changing. In spring, take them off and you can switch to 38 or 40 mm for the tracks.

The threaded T47 bottom bracket is an asset for anyone who rides in the rain: it is easy to clean and regrease, without the creaks of press-fit bottom brackets. The 160 mm Centerlock rotors brake consistently on wet roads, and the Tubeless Ready tyres avoid many punctures on the flinty tracks.

Which Domane should you choose?

Our take: the SL 5 weighs 200 g more with its alloy wheels, easy to live with in winter; the SL 6 AXS adds 50 mm carbon and wireless shifting, welcome for the rest of the year. The SLR 7 saves a further 980 g, at the cost of an OCLV 900 frame.
