Trek Domane SLR 9: Dura-Ace speed, with added comfort

With its OCLV Series 900 carbon frame, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 2x12 drivetrain and 51 mm Aeolus RSL rims, the Trek Domane SLR 9 Gen 5 claims 7.34 kg in size ML. It is an endurance bike that doesn't hold back your ambitions: it easily keeps up with a fast group on the flat roads around Béziers. The Navy Smoke/Trek White version plays on a smoky navy blue set off with white, an understated colour that ages well.

Who is it for?

For the club cyclist who strings together brisk weekend rides and wants a responsive bike without wrecking their back. It also suits the sportive rider who prefers to arrive fresh at the foot of the final climb rather than scrape a few seconds on the flat.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. At Trek, each level of carbon has a number: the higher it goes, the more optimised the layup and the fewer fibres are needed for a given stiffness. The 900, reserved for SLR models, is moulded in 3D in rigid tooling that limits overlapping sheets. On the Domane, this saves about 220 g of frame weight compared with the OCLV 500 of an SL, with strength up to 20 % greater than the previous OCLV 800. If this SLR 9 drops to 7.34 kg, its RSL wheels and Dura-Ace also play their part compared with the SLR 7.

In a bunch, the 51 mm wheels keep the speed up when the pace lifts, and the precision of Di2 lets you change sprocket under full acceleration without the slightest hesitation. In a strong sea wind they catch a little side wind: nothing worrying, but worth knowing on the coast roads towards Agde.

Dura-Ace R9250 Di2 keeps a 50/34 and an 11-34 cassette, classic sportive gearing, with crisp shifts even under load. At every service, our workshop updates the Di2 system; the threaded T47 bottom bracket makes bearing replacement simple.

Our take: with an identical frame, the SLR 9 weighs 320 g less than the SLR 7 (7.34 against 7.66 kg) thanks to Dura-Ace and RSL wheels. The SLR 9 AXS saves only 50 g more, but adds a power meter and a 48/35 that is easier on climbs.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes: the smaller one if you lack flexibility, the larger one if you have a long torso. Handlebar, stem and cranks follow the size.
