The Trek Domane AL 2 Gen 4 is an aluminium road bike that is happy to ride to work: Alpha Series 100 frame, carbon fork, Shimano Claris 2x8, disc brakes and 10.35 kg in size 56. Trek has provided mounts for a rack and mudguards, making it a genuine fast commuting bike. The Matte Dark Star Black colour, an understated matt black, stays discreet parked outside the office and ages well.

Who is it for?

For the employee who covers several kilometres a day between home and work and wants to go faster than on a hybrid, the student heading to campus, or the cyclist who wants a single bike for the week and Sunday rides. The upright position lets you keep an eye on the traffic.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Domane AL 2 is built on Alpha Series 100 aluminium, exactly the same frame as the Domane AL 4 and AL 5: the bike can therefore evolve with you, component by component. Trek pairs it with a full-carbon fork that lightens the front end, and the latest redesign took about 250 g off the frame and fork compared with the old disc-brake Domane AL. Internal cable routing, tapered head tube and 12 mm thru axles: these are standards found on much more expensive bikes.

Put simply: Alpha 100 favours toughness and versatility over chasing grams. The Alpha 300 of the Émonda ALR lightens the bike but gives up mudguards, and the OCLV 500 carbon of the Domane SL only really becomes worthwhile for a cyclist who already rides a lot.

For commuting, reliability comes first: the 8-speed Claris drivetrain copes well with repeated starts at traffic lights, its chain wears slowly and is cheap to replace. The cable disc brakes stay effective in all weathers, and the universal UDH derailleur hanger can be replaced in a few minutes after a tumble in the car park.

With a rack, panniers and mudguards, the Domane AL 2 eats up the journeys between the districts of Béziers, Villeneuve-lès-Béziers or Sérignan without you arriving in a sweat. The 32 mm Kwaremont Comp tyres, protected by their Hard-Case Lite layer, limit punctures on cycle lanes where glass and gravel build up.

Our take: for daily use, the AL 2 is the most rational Domane; the 250 g saved by the AL 4 and the 550 g of the AL 5 in size 56 are felt mainly on climbs, hardly at all in town.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, take the smaller one if you are a beginner: the position will be more compact and reassuring. Handlebar and stem grow with the frame.

Mudguards at the same time?	Yes, front and rear, with the stock 32 mm tyres.
