For the tall rider who rides technical trails all year round and wants a tough bike, without worrying about knocks to an aluminium frame. It also suits the mountain biker moving from a hardtail to their first full-suspension trail bike who wants a modern drivetrain from the outset.
Alpha Platinum aluminium, strong and well finished. The Gen 6 Fuel EX 8 shares its suspension kinematics, Mino Link, adjustable leverage ratio and storage hatch with the carbon versions; only the material changes. Alpha Platinum is Trek's high-end aluminium: hydroformed tubes and smoothed welds, for a frame that forgives knocks and crashes better than you might think.
| OCLV Mountain | Alpha Platinum (Gen 6) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Gen 7) | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end aluminium | Trek's most refined aluminium |
| Construction | OCLV layup reinforced against impacts | Hydroformed tubes, smoothed welds | Refined tube shapes |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Gen 6 Fuel EX 5 / 8 | Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) |
| What it means | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | Proven, robust base | Alloy version of the new generation |
Put simply: here you get wireless electronic shifting, rare on an aluminium frame, without paying for carbon. The trade-off shows on the scales: 15.88 kg, which is 1.1 kg more than the carbon 9.9 X0 AXS.
The Fox Rhythm 36 uses the chassis of the famous 36, with a simpler GRIP damper: it offers reassuring stiffness in the rock gardens of the Caroux, with an easy-to-use compression dial. Paired with the Float X shock, it gives the Fuel EX 8 very serious downhill behaviour.
The SRAM CenterLine rotors, 200 mm at the front and 180 mm at the rear, gripped by four-piston DB8 callipers, provide a comfortable margin on a large frame carrying a heavy rider. The 2.50-inch XR5 tyres grip well on dry earth and the loose stones of the garrigue.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 5 (Gen 6) | Alpha Platinum alloy | 140 / 150 mm | Shimano Deore 1x12 | 15.29 kg |
| Fuel EX 8 GX AXS (Gen 6) | Alpha Platinum alloy | 140 / 150 mm | SRAM GX AXS T-Type 1x12 | 15.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 8 (Gen 7) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | Shimano 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS (Gen 6) | OCLV Mountain carbon | 140 / 140 mm (size S page) | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | 14.78 kg |
Our take: 1.1 kg more than the carbon Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS, but the same kinematics and the same wireless T-Type. The Gen 7 Fuel EX 8 moves to 145 / 150 mm on a NEXT Platinum frame, at 16.58 kg.
