Trek Top Fuel 5 Lichen Green: the lightweight full-suspension bike to get started

The Gen 3 Trek Top Fuel 5 is an Alpha Platinum aluminium full-suspension mountain bike, with 120 mm of rear travel, a 130 mm RockShox Recon fork and a Shimano Deore 1x12 drivetrain, weighing 15.60 kg in size M. Designed to eat up trail miles with liveliness, it keeps internal storage and a 150 mm dropper post. Its Lichen Green colour, a soft, light lichen green, sets it apart from the usual dark shades.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker who wants to leave the hardtail behind and gain comfort on long rides, without moving to a bike that is too heavy or too descent-focused. It suits sporty trail rides, regional marathon events and hilly loops with plenty of pedalling.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha Platinum aluminium, the gateway to the Top Fuel. This Top Fuel 5 belongs to the 3rd generation: an Alpha Platinum aluminium frame with internal storage, Mino Link and Knock Block 2.0 steering stop, which protects the top tube by limiting handlebar rotation. It is an older model still in the range, but its base remains that of a true lightweight trail bike.

What it meansThe right balance of strength and weightLess weight, frame with lifetime warrantyNo rear suspension

Put simply: compared with the Gen 4 Top Fuel 8 (14.58 kg), it weighs 1 kg more and makes do with simpler Shimano MT200 brakes. In return, it offers the same lively, playful spirit with a build that is easy to maintain.

With 120 mm at the rear, the Top Fuel keeps efficient pedalling: it climbs tracks well and does not bob excessively when you stand up on the pedals. The Recon fork lockout and the firm setting on the X-Fusion shock are useful on road links to the trails of the Montagne Noire.

The Knock Block 2.0 stop limits handlebar rotation to protect the frame in a crash; you will not notice it while riding. The 23 mm Kovee rims and 2.40-inch XR4 tyres favour efficiency; we recommend going tubeless for more grip and to avoid small punctures.

Which Top Fuel should you choose?

Our take: the Gen 4 Top Fuel 8 weighs 1 kg less (14.58 kg) with four-piston brakes and a Fox shock. The Top Fuel 5 remains the simplest way into the family.
