For the mountain biker around Béziers who rides all year round on dry, stony trails full of steps, and wears out bikes faster than they would like. They want a carbon frame that is protected, generous suspension and parts that are easy to maintain.
OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV Mountain is the off-road version of OCLV carbon: the same compaction of the plies under heat and pressure, but a layup designed to withstand rock strikes and landings rather than to chase the lowest weight. On this Fuel MX 9.8 Eagle 90, the frame gets down tube protection, a storage hatch and the UDH hanger, and it benefits from Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel MX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel MX 9) | Carbon Fuel EX / LX | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon, tuned for impacts | Trek's most advanced aluminium | Same Gen 7 Fuel platform |
| Construction | Plies compacted under heat and pressure | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Identical OCLV Mountain carbon |
| Gen 7 Fuel frameset (M) | 3.31 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 4.95 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 3.31 kg for the EX |
| What it means | Around 1.6 kg less on the frame, lifetime warranty | Heavier, gentler on the budget | 145 / 150 mm (EX) or 160 / 170 mm (LX) |
Put simply: this 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most simply equipped of the carbon Fuel MX models. Its frame is that of the higher versions; the difference lies in the SRAM Eagle 90 groupset and the Maven Bronze brakes, two items that can be upgraded later without touching the frame.
The garrigue around Béziers spares nothing: flying stones, limestone steps, bushes that rub. The Fuel MX frame gets down tube protection and transport protection, and its cables run through guided channels that prevent rattling. The threaded 73 mm BSA bottom bracket can be removed and replaced without special tools.
The 4-piston SRAM Maven Bronze brakes work on 200 and 180 mm rotors: enough to keep power on long rocky descents. They run on mineral oil, which simplifies bleeding, which we carry out in our workshop once or twice a year depending on your riding.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel MX 9.8 Eagle 90 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel MX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | not disclosed |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 160 / 170 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 15.97 kg |
Our take: the carbon Fuel frame weighs around 1.6 kg less than the aluminium one (Fuel EX framesets), but Trek does not publish the complete weight of this MX; the alloy Fuel MX 9 XT weighs 16.91 kg in M. Its 170 mm fork places it above the MX 9.8 XT (160 mm).

LVR sizing advice Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 mm in S to 200 mm from L upwards.

| Is carbon vulnerable to stones? | The down tube is protected as standard; additional film can be fitted in our workshop. |
| Bottom bracket maintenance? | Threaded BSA bottom bracket: simple removal and no creaking, a real plus on dry terrain. |
| Storage in the frame? | Yes, a hatch gives access to integrated storage for tools and a spare tube. |
| Is the matte black easy to look after? | A gentle wax-free product is enough; avoid glossy polishes on matte areas. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A tough carbon Fuel MX that is simple to maintain, ideal for the dry, rough trails of our region. The glossy carmine and matte black give it an understated, classy look.
