For the mountain biker who rides the trails of the Salagou and Lodève, loves bermed corners and small jumps, and is looking for a more committed bike than a classic trail bike. It also suits the rider starting out in enduro who wants to progress without jumping straight to a 170 mm bike.
Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its aluminium in three tiers: Alpha Silver on the Marlin, Alpha Platinum above it, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the 7th generation of the Fuel. It is the latter that forms the base of the Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90. On the Fuel EX of the same generation, the alloy frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, against 3.31 kg for the carbon version: the gap is real, but a well-made alloy frame takes rocks and crashes without leaving you worrying about the slightest invisible crack.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: with the same drivetrain, this alloy Fuel MX amounts to a complete bike capable of the same descents as the carbon 9.8. The extra grams are felt mainly on long climbs; on descents, the stability of a slightly heavier frame is no bad thing.
The mullet set-up, 29 inches at the front and 27.5 at the rear, really changes the ride: the smaller rear wheel leaves more room for the rider when shifting back over the saddle on steep slopes, and the bike moves more quickly from one corner to the next. The MaxxGrip-compound Maxxis Assegai at the front bites well into dry, dusty earth.
The four-piston SRAM Maven Bronze brakes are sized for long descents; their power calls for a progressive touch on the lever. The frame offers adjustable progression: a rider who jumps a lot can make the end-stroke firmer without changing shock.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 (Fox) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 17.38 kg |
Our take: with the same drivetrain, the MX 9 Eagle 90 weighs only 200 g more than the Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90, for more travel at both ends. The MX 9 XT, at 16.91 kg, swaps SRAM for Shimano XT and 203 mm rotors.

LVR sizing advice Hesitating between two sizes: the smaller one makes the bike playful in tight corners, the larger one makes it more composed at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 to 200 mm.

| Can it handle the bike park? | Yes for regular sessions; for intensive use, the Fuel LX is better armed. |
| What is progression? | The way the shock firms up towards the end of its travel; the frame lets you change it. |
| Are the brakes too powerful? | No, they just need a progressive touch; we set them up to suit your hands. |
| Is this matt red fragile? | Clean it with a gentle, wax-free product to keep the original matt look. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A playful Fuel MX that loves corners and little take-offs as much as fast descents. The terracotta red with coppery highlights gives it real personality.
