The mountain biker who spends their days at the bike park or laps descents by shuttle will find a bike here that is tough enough for those intense days and versatile enough to pedal home. It will appeal to riders who jump and seek sensations in the air.
Alpha NEXT Platinum: aluminium designed for enduro. This third and highest tier of Trek's MTB aluminium is reserved for the Gen 7 Fuels. On this Fuel LX 9 XT, it provides a frame that can be adjusted every which way: progression, rocker, shock mount. The threaded BSA bottom bracket does not creak and is easy to remove in the workshop, the ISCG 05 mounts accept a chain guide, and storage is built into the down tube.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
In short: a frame made to last and to be tinkered with, without the fear of cracking carbon on a rock. The 17.79 kg in size M are those of a true descending bike that gets back up the hill under its own steam.
At the bike park, repetition wears out kit. The DHX2 coil shock keeps the same behaviour from the first run to the last, with no variation due to heat. Paired with the Fox 38 fork and its 38 mm stanchions, it provides a stiff, precise platform for landing jumps.
After a day of laps, a check is a must: axle tightness, tyre condition, pad wear. The Maxxis Assegai and Minion DHR II tyres with EXO+ casings hold up well, but a pressure suited to landings remains essential. We advise you on pressure and a possible insert.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 150 / 160 mm | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | 17.38 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 160 / 170 mm | 17.79 kg |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
Our take: for the bike park, this LX 9 XT and the LX 9 Eagle 90 share the same Fox suspension; the XT weighs 410 g more and offers Shimano brakes. The Fuel MX 9 XT is lighter, but less at ease on big jumps.
