For the mountain biker who loves fast, slippery tracks, loose ground and hard-leaned corners, and who does a few rides a year on regional enduro courses without wanting a dedicated bike. It suits an already confident rider looking for a playful yet tough bike.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. For the Gen 7 Fuel, Trek did not keep the new features for carbon alone: its most refined alloy, Alpha NEXT Platinum, gets the same modular platform. The rocker and lower shock mount can be swapped to change the geometry and end-stroke behaviour, and the ABP pivot on the rear axle helps the suspension stay active when you brake. Storage is hidden in the down tube.

| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
Put simply: this Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 puts the money into suspension, brakes and tyres rather than the frame. With equivalent suspension, the carbon of a Fuel EX 9.8 saves weight, not descending performance.
On the red earth of the Salagou and the trails of Lodève, the ground rolls like ball bearings: the MaxxGrip Minion DHF at the front holds grip in corners, while the MaxxTerra DHR II at the rear brakes well and lasts longer. With EXO+ casings, these tyres handle low pressure without pinching on rocks.
The Maven Bronze brakes, with a 200 mm front rotor, offer power that lets you brake later and shorter. Their mineral oil is easy to bleed; we do a first check bleed after a few rides, once the pads are bedded in.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 8 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Rhythm 36, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 70 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |

| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not disclosed |
Our take: at 16.58 kg in M, this Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 is 310 g lighter than the Fuel EX 8 and 560 g lighter than the Fuel EX 9 XT. For wireless shifting, look at the Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS.

The LVR Cycles verdict A Fuel EX 9 made for drifting and braking hard, with Maxxis tyres and Maven brakes built for fast descents. Its matt Sedona red with coppery highlights is a real aesthetic success.
