Trek Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 Sedona Red: red for the earth of the Salagou

With its 160 mm Fox DHX2 coil shock and 170 mm Fox Factory 38 fork, the Gen 7 Trek Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 takes on committed descents on an Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium frame, weighing 17.38 kg in size M. 2.5-inch Maxxis Assegai and Minion DHR II tyres, four-piston brakes: everything is designed for grip. The Matte Sedona Red/Pennyflake Splatter finish pairs a matt ochre red with copper flecks.

Who is it for?

Designed for the mountain biker who links descents on loose, dusty ground and wants grip and stability above all. It will appeal to riders who head out in groups at weekends on loops where you sometimes push on the climbs to make the most of the descents.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its alloys in three tiers: Alpha Silver for the Marlin, Alpha Platinum for more committed models, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the Gen 7 Fuel models. It is the latter that this Fuel LX 9 uses. The frame gets everything that makes the platform: adjustable progression, interchangeable kinematic parts, integrated storage, threaded bottom bracket and ISCG 05 mounts for a chain guide.

What it meansTakes knocks, more affordableAbout 1.6 kg less on the frameset170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable

Put simply: on an enduro bike, aluminium is not a cut-price choice. It takes rock strikes and crashes without worry, and the alloy frameset weighs only about 1.6 kg more than its carbon equivalent (Trek measurement on the Fuel EX).

The choice of tyres says a lot about this bike: a MAXXGRIP Assegai at the front for cornering grip, a MAXXTERRA Minion DHR II at the rear for braking and durability. EXO+ casing on both, which limits pinch flats on rocks. On the red earth of Lac du Salagou, dry and rolling like gravel, it is the front that holds the line.

The four-piston SRAM Maven Bronze brakes, with a larger rotor at the front, deliver plenty of power for little lever effort. On long slopes, that eases the forearms. We bleed and check the hydraulic system at each service, because an enduro brake works hard.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Our take: the LX 9 Eagle 90 offers 10 mm more than the Fuel MX 9 at each end, for an extra 600 g. If the weight puts you off, the carbon LX 9.8 XT Di2 drops to 15.97 kg with the same Fox suspension.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size.

Is the matt red fragile?Clean it with a gentle, wax-free product; protective film can be fitted in the workshop.
Which sizes are available?M and L in this colour, from 165 to 188 cm.

The LVR Cycles verdict

An alloy enduro bike built for grip, with high-end Fox suspension and gravity tyres. The copper-flecked ochre red goes wonderfully with the red earth of the Hérault.

+ Gravity-grade Maxxis tyres
+ Original ochre red
Cons
- Heavy bike for long climbs
- Matt finish needs care

Why buy from LVR Cycles? In Béziers, we set up your Fuel LX tubeless, bleed the brakes and set the suspension to your weight and terrain.
