When the trails turn rocky, the Trek Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 Gen 7 relies on an Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium frame, a 150 mm Lyrik Ultimate, a Super Deluxe Ultimate shock for 145 mm and Maxxis tyres with EXO+ casings. Trek quotes 16.58 kg in size M. Its Matte Sedona Red/Pennyflake Splatter finish pairs a matt brick red with copper-coloured flecks, like small coins.

For the rider who loves technical mountain trails, rock gardens, slabs and steps, and wants a bike that absorbs repeated hits without flinching. It is also aimed at anyone who has punctured too often on lightweight tyres.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. For the Gen 7 Fuel, Trek did not keep the new features for carbon alone: its most refined alloy, Alpha NEXT Platinum, gets the same modular platform. The rocker and lower shock mount can be swapped to change the geometry and end-stroke behaviour, and the ABP pivot on the rear axle helps the suspension stay active when you brake. Storage is hidden in the down tube.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
Put simply: this Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 puts the money into suspension, brakes and tyres rather than the frame. With equivalent suspension, the carbon of a Fuel EX 9.8 saves weight, not descending performance.
In the rock gardens of the Caroux, aluminium has an often-forgotten advantage: a rock strike on the down tube leaves a mark, rarely more. The stock down tube protector adds an extra layer, and the EXO+ casings of the Maxxis tyres limit the sidewall cuts that end a ride.
The support of the Lyrik Ultimate stops the fork diving on steps, keeping the geometry stable just when it matters most. We recommend adding an anti-pinch insert at the rear if you run low pressures: we fit it in the workshop along with the tubeless set-up.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 8 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Rhythm 36, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 70 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.14 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not disclosed |
Our take: this Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 weighs 560 g less than the Fuel EX 9 XT, which relies on a Fox Factory 36 fork and a 203 mm front rotor. The Fuel EX 8 makes do with Fox Rhythm and Float X suspension, also at 16.58 kg.

LVR sizing advice Between two sizes, we recommend the smaller one if you like playing with the terrain, the larger one if you want stability at high speed. The Line Dropper post goes from 150 mm in S to 200 mm in L and XL; the S rolls on a 27.5-inch rear wheel.

| Do I need an anti-pinch insert? | Recommended at the rear if you run low pressure on rocky terrain. |
| Is the aluminium frame vulnerable to rocks? | Less so than carbon: a down tube protector is fitted as standard. |
| What tyre pressure? | It depends on your weight: we work it out with you when we hand the bike over. |
| Is the Sedona red very loud? | It is rich but matt, with discreet copper flakes. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A tough, reassuring Fuel EX 9 on rocky terrain, thanks to its Lyrik Ultimate and Maxxis EXO+ tyres. Its Sedona red with copper flecks gives it a warm, original look.
