Designed for the mountain biker who links descents on loose, dusty ground and wants grip and stability above all. It will appeal to riders who head out in groups at weekends on loops where you sometimes push on the climbs to make the most of the descents.
Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its alloys in three tiers: Alpha Silver for the Marlin, Alpha Platinum for more committed models, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the Gen 7 Fuel models. It is the latter that this Fuel LX 9 uses. The frame gets everything that makes the platform: adjustable progression, interchangeable kinematic parts, integrated storage, threaded bottom bracket and ISCG 05 mounts for a chain guide.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
Put simply: on an enduro bike, aluminium is not a cut-price choice. It takes rock strikes and crashes without worry, and the alloy frameset weighs only about 1.6 kg more than its carbon equivalent (Trek measurement on the Fuel EX).
The choice of tyres says a lot about this bike: a MAXXGRIP Assegai at the front for cornering grip, a MAXXTERRA Minion DHR II at the rear for braking and durability. EXO+ casing on both, which limits pinch flats on rocks. On the red earth of Lac du Salagou, dry and rolling like gravel, it is the front that holds the line.
The four-piston SRAM Maven Bronze brakes, with a larger rotor at the front, deliver plenty of power for little lever effort. On long slopes, that eases the forearms. We bleed and check the hydraulic system at each service, because an enduro brake works hard.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 150 / 160 mm | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | 17.38 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 160 / 170 mm | 17.79 kg |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
Our take: the LX 9 Eagle 90 offers 10 mm more than the Fuel MX 9 at each end, for an extra 600 g. If the weight puts you off, the carbon LX 9.8 XT Di2 drops to 15.97 kg with the same Fox suspension.

LVR sizing advice Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size.

The LVR Cycles verdict An alloy enduro bike built for grip, with high-end Fox suspension and gravity tyres. The copper-flecked ochre red goes wonderfully with the red earth of the Hérault.
