It will appeal to the Shimano loyalist, attached to the feel of XT brakes and the simplicity of a cable-operated drivetrain, who rides enduro and wants first-rate Fox suspension. It is also a bike favoured by riders who maintain their own kit.
Alpha NEXT Platinum: aluminium designed for enduro. This third and highest tier of Trek's MTB aluminium is reserved for the Gen 7 Fuels. On this Fuel LX 9 XT, it provides a frame that can be adjusted every which way: progression, rocker, shock mount. The threaded BSA bottom bracket does not creak and is easy to remove in the workshop, the ISCG 05 mounts accept a chain guide, and storage is built into the down tube.

| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
In short: a frame made to last and to be tinkered with, without the fear of cracking carbon on a rock. The 17.79 kg in size M are those of a true descending bike that gets back up the hill under its own steam.
The Shimano XT M8220 brakes stand out for a lever with a firm bite point and progressive power. With a 203 mm RT86 rotor at the front and 180 mm at the rear, they handle the long descents of the Caroux without fading. Their mineral oil is simple to bleed, a job we carry out at every service.
The 12-speed XT drivetrain remains mechanical: a cable to change from time to time, a tension adjustment in two minutes. The 10-51 M8200 cassette offers a wide range for climbing, and the 30-tooth chainring stays suited to steep terrain. It is a proven groupset whose parts are easy to find.
