Designed for long trail loops, the Trek Fuel EX 9.8 Eagle 90 Gen 7 brings together an OCLV Mountain carbon frame, 145 mm of rear travel, 150 mm at the front and a 12-speed SRAM 10-52 cassette. Trek does not publish its weight for this version: as a reference, the 9.8 XT with the identical frame comes in at 15.28 kg in size M. The Purple Phaze/Amethyst Marble finish pairs a deep purple with marbled amethyst veins, dark from a distance, shimmering in the sun.

For the endurance mountain biker who racks up 1,000 metres of climbing or more on a ride and wants a bike that can climb for a long time without wearing them out, then pay them back on the descent. It is also aimed at riders who head out self-sufficient for the day and appreciate storing tools and an inner tube in the frame.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. For mountain biking, Trek adapts its OCLV process into a Mountain version: the fibre sheets are still heat-compacted under pressure to eliminate micro-voids, but the layup prioritises resistance to rock strikes and crashes over saving grams. On the Gen 7 Fuel EX, the carbon frame kit weighs 3.31 kg in size M, versus 4.95 kg for the Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium version, and it is covered by Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel EX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel EX 5 to 9) | Road OCLV (Madone, Domane) | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Trek's best MTB aluminium | Road carbon, OCLV 500 to 900 |
| Construction | Layup focused on impact resistance | Hydroformed tubes, dressed welds | Layup focused on lightness and stiffness |
| Fuel EX frameset (M) | 3.31 kg | 4.95 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | 1.64 kg lighter than aluminium, same geometry | Heavier, gentler on the budget | Not designed for MTB impacts |
In short: the 9.8 Eagle 90 is the entry point to the carbon Fuel EX, and it makes a clear-cut choice: the budget goes into the frame and the RockShox Ultimate suspension, the same as on the 9.9, while the drivetrain stays mechanical and simple. Trek does not publish its weight; the 9.8 XT, with the same frame, serves as a reference at 15.28 kg in M.
The down tube hatch changes the way you head out on long rides: multi-tool, tubeless repair plugs and a spare tube travel safely tucked away, with no backpack heating up your back in the middle of a Béziers summer. You also keep a low centre of gravity, which you feel through linked corners.
On climbs, the Super Deluxe Ultimate RC2T shock has a partial lockout lever that calms pedal bob on the long DFCI fire roads of the Espinouse. The 30-tooth chainring and 52-tooth sprocket give a very low gear that lets you stay seated, rear wheel planted, when the gradient exceeds 15%.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.8 Eagle 90 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type | not published |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Mechanical Shimano XT | 15.28 kg |
| Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Wireless SRAM X0 Eagle AXS | 14.08 kg |
Our take: for a climber, the gap between the 9.8 Eagle 90 and the 9.9 X0 AXS (14.08 kg in M) comes down mainly to the carbon wheels and drivetrain. The frame and suspension are the same; it is this foundation that determines efficiency on climbs.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, the smaller makes the Fuel EX more playful in tight switchbacks, the larger more stable at high speed in rock gardens. The dropper post goes from 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size, and size S runs a mixed 29 / 27.5 set-up.

| Shock lockout? | Yes, the Super Deluxe RC2T offers a firm position for smooth climbs. |
| Is the purple eye-catching? | It looks almost black in the shade and reveals its amethyst glints in full light. |

The LVR Cycles verdict A carbon trail bike built for days with lots of climbing, with low gearing and a frame that carries the essentials. The amethyst-marbled purple gives it an understated elegance.
