The right choice for the mountain biker who heads out for the whole day, links several descents and climbs back up on forest tracks. It suits those who prefer a tough, adjustable bike to a light one, and who want to ride the Montagne Noire as happily as the Pyrenees on holiday.
An alloy frame that adjusts like a race frame. The Fuel LX 9 is built on Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the highest grade of Trek's mountain bike alloys (above Alpha Platinum and Alpha Silver). What sets it apart is the kinematics: the progression can be changed, the rocker link and lower shock mount can be swapped, and the ABP pivot on the rear axle keeps the suspension working under braking.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
Put simply: this frame adapts to your riding instead of imposing its own. It is heavier than the OCLV Mountain carbon of the 9.8, but it is more forgiving of impacts and easier to repair.
On a six-hour ride, reliability counts as much as performance. The Eagle 90 T-Type drivetrain mounts directly on the frame dropout, without a conventional derailleur hanger, making it less sensitive to impacts. Its steel crankset with a 30-tooth chainring takes rock strikes in its stride.
On long climbs, the 30 x 52 lets you keep a reasonable cadence. On the descents, the Bontrager Line Dropper post frees up all the space under your hips so you can move around on the bike. The in-frame storage holds a spare inner tube and a tool.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 150 / 160 mm | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | 17.38 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Wireless SRAM X0 AXS | 160 / 170 mm | n/a |
| Slash 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 170 / 170 mm | 16.68 kg |
Our take: for long days, the LX 9 Eagle 90 remains simpler to live with than the LX 9 X0 AXS, with no battery to charge. The Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 saves 600 g, but with 10 mm less suspension travel.

| What can I store in the frame? | An inner tube, a tyre lever and a small tool: the essentials for trailside repairs. |
| Is the T-Type derailleur strong? | Yes, it mounts directly on the rear axle, with no fragile hanger. |
| For travelling to the mountains? | Yes, frame protection for transport is fitted as standard. |
| Does the matte red get damaged? | A gentle wax-free product is enough; avoid glossy polishes. |

The LVR Cycles verdict A durable, reliable Fuel LX for big mountain rides. The brick red flecked with copper gives it a warm personality.
