Trek Fuel LX 9.8 Eagle 90 Dark Carmine: carbon for long climbs

The Trek Fuel LX 9.8 Eagle 90 Gen 7 puts its OCLV Mountain carbon frame to work on the climbs: less weight to haul, and a 10-52 cassette for steep gradients. A 170 mm RockShox ZEB Ultimate fork and a 160 mm Vivid Ultimate for the descent. Trek does not publish its weight; for reference: 15.97 kg in a size M for the 9.8 XT Di2 on the same frame. The Gloss Dark Carmine / Matte Trek Black version contrasts a glossy dark carmine with a matte black.

Who is it for?

The mountain biker who racks up plenty of climbing before each descent, and finds alloy enduro bikes too heavy on long ascents, will find a good compromise here. It suits riders heading into the mountains for the day.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's mountain bike signature. OCLV is Trek's carbon process; its Mountain version is tuned for impact resistance rather than weight saving alone. The Fuel LX 9.8 benefits with a frame lighter than the Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy of the LX 9, the same adjustable kinematics, a UDH hanger and Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame.

What it meansAbout 1.6 kg less on the framesetHeavier, more affordableMore travel, less versatile

Put simply: the 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most direct way to get a carbon Fuel LX. The drivetrain stays mechanical and robust; the weight is not published, but the 9.8 XT Di2 on the same frame weighs 15.97 kg in M.

Carbon saves weight where you feel it most: on the frame, at the centre of the bike. According to Trek, the carbon Fuel EX frameset weighs 1.64 kg less than the alloy one; a similar difference can be felt here on the long climbs of the Espinouse. The 30 x 52 lets you keep a steady cadence.

On the climbs, the Charger 3.2 RC2 damper lets you firm up the low-speed compression to limit bobbing. The Vivid stays active and preserves traction on rocky climbs. At the top, just open the compression and drop the saddle to attack the descent.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Our take: for climbing, this carbon 9.8 Eagle 90 is lighter than the alloy LX 9 Eagle 90 (17.38 kg). The 9.8 XT Di2 (15.97 kg in M) adds Di2; the more aggressive Slash 9.8 XT Di2 weighs 16.63 kg.

LVR sizing advice

Like the other carbon Fuel LX models, it is offered up to XXL and covers riders from 155 to 203 cm. Tall riders finally get a carbon enduro bike in their size.
