Who is it for?

For the rider who wants a very stable front end when the terrain gets rough, on the rocky descents of the Caroux or regional enduro stages, while keeping a bike that can climb back up. The four sizes fit a 1.55 m rider as well as a tall one.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its aluminium in three tiers: Alpha Silver on the Marlin, Alpha Platinum above it, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the 7th generation of the Fuel. It is the latter that forms the base of the Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90. On the Fuel EX of the same generation, the alloy frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, against 3.31 kg for the carbon version: the gap is real, but a well-made alloy frame takes rocks and crashes without leaving you worrying about the slightest invisible crack.

Put simply: with the same drivetrain, this alloy Fuel MX amounts to a complete bike capable of the same descents as the carbon 9.8. The extra grams are felt mainly on long climbs; on descents, the stability of a slightly heavier frame is no bad thing.

The ZEB is a fork with large-diameter stanchions, renowned for its torsional stiffness: the front wheel holds the chosen line even when it hits a rock step. Its Charger 3.2 RC2 damper and the Vivid shock offer plenty of adjustments; we start from a neutral baseline, then fine-tune after your first rides.

The frame has ISCG 05 mounts for a chain guide and a threaded BSA bottom bracket that is easy to maintain. With 170 mm up front, the bike comes close to an enduro bike; the rear, however, keeps the lively character of the Fuel MX, giving a bike whose front end reassures and whose rear end accelerates.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy160 / 170 mmSRAM Eagle 90 1x1217.38 kg

Our take: the MX 9 X0 AXS shares exactly this RockShox suspension with a wireless drivetrain and Maven Silver brakes. For a true enduro bike, the Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 goes up to 160 mm at the rear for 17.38 kg.

LVR sizing advice

Hesitating between two sizes: the smaller one makes the bike playful in tight corners, the larger one makes it more composed at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 to 200 mm.

Your questions

Why 170 mm up front? It is Trek's choice on this version: more margin on impacts, at the cost of a slightly higher front end.
Can I fit a chain guide?Yes, the frame has ISCG 05 mounts; we can fit it in our workshop.
Which size for 1.80 m?The L covers 177 to 188 cm; to be checked against your inseam in store.
Does this grey show the dirt? The black speckles hide mud and dust marks very well.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A version that focuses on the front end: the 170 mm ZEB gives invaluable confidence on aggressive descents. The grey finish speckled with black stays understated and versatile.

Pros
+ Stiff, reassuring ZEB fork
+ Four sizes from S to XL
+ ISCG 05 mounts for a chain guide
Cons
- Basic mechanical drivetrain
- A bit of weight to haul uphill
