Who is it for?

For the mountain biker on a 130 to 140 mm trail bike who feels limited as soon as the trail turns steep and rough. They want to keep some margin on rocky descents, without going as far as a pure enduro bike.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV Mountain is the off-road version of OCLV carbon: the same compaction of the plies under heat and pressure, but a layup designed to withstand rock strikes and landings rather than to chase the lowest weight. On this Fuel MX 9.8 Eagle 90, the frame gets down tube protection, a storage hatch and the UDH hanger, and it benefits from Trek's lifetime warranty.

Put simply: this 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most simply equipped of the carbon Fuel MX models. Its frame is that of the higher versions; the difference lies in the SRAM Eagle 90 groupset and the Maven Bronze brakes, two items that can be upgraded later without touching the frame.

The mixed-wheel set-up changes the handling: the big front wheel rolls over steps better and holds its line through scree, while the small rear wheel leaves more room behind the saddle when you shift your hips back on steep slopes. On the singletrack of the Caroux, where tight hairpins follow one after another, the 27.5-inch rear end pivots more easily.

The SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type derailleur mounts directly on the frame's UDH hanger, with no fragile intermediate hanger: after a rock strike, alignment stays true. The 10-52 cassette and 30-tooth chainring give a gear low enough to climb the tracks of the Montagne Noire seated, with the shock open to keep traction.

Our take: compared with the alloy Fuel MX 9 XT (16.91 kg in M), this 9.8 moves to carbon and gains 10 mm up front with the 170 mm ZEB. The Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 (15.97 kg) goes further towards enduro with 160 mm at the rear.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 mm in S to 200 mm from L upwards.

Your questions

Can it do enduro?Yes for fun and aggressive trail rides; for enduro racing, the Fuel LX with its 160 mm at the rear is better suited.
Why two wheel sizes? The 29-inch up front to roll over obstacles, the 27.5-inch at the rear for agility and clearance.
Can a chain guide be fitted?Yes, the frame has ISCG 05 mounts; we fit it in our workshop.
Is the marbling identical on every frame? The marbling varies slightly from one bike to another: each frame is a little unique.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A balanced carbon Fuel MX for moving from trail to all-mountain without changing how you ride. The teal marbled with light green gives it a fresh look, highly visible on the trails.

Pros
+ Reassuring 170 mm ZEB fork
+ Agile mixed-wheel set-up
+ Carbon frame with integrated storage
Cons
- Weight not published by Trek
- Maven Bronze brakes, entry level of the Maven range
