On a steep climb, shifting under load is often tricky: the Trek Fuel MX 9 XT Di2 Gen 7 hands this task to the electronic Shimano XT Di2 drivetrain, paired with a 10-51 cassette and Fox Factory suspension with 150 mm at the rear and 160 mm up front. Its weight is not published by Trek; for reference: 16.91 kg in M for the Fuel MX 9 XT with the same Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium frame. The Matte Sedona Red/Pennyflake Splatter shade is a matte ochre red with copper flecks.

For the mountain biker who loves climbing as much as descending and wants crisp shifts on steep ramps. It will suit the rider who links the technical climbs of the Montagne Noire with the descents that follow.
The frame: Alpha NEXT Platinum, Trek's cutting-edge alloy. Above the Alpha Silver of the Marlin and Alpha Platinum, Alpha NEXT Platinum is reserved for the Gen 7 Fuel. No weight is published for this Di2 version; for scale, Trek gives 4.95 kg for the alloy Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset and 3.31 kg for its carbon equivalent.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: the budget here goes into the electronic drivetrain rather than the frame, which makes sense if you climb a lot.
With an electronic drivetrain, the derailleur executes each shift identically every time, even when you are pedalling hard. That means less anticipation and keeping your momentum on steep climbs and accelerations.
The 10-51 cassette and 30-tooth chainring offer a very low gear for the steepest ramps. The Line Dropper post drops at the top to clear the way for the descent, and the XT brakes with a 203 mm front rotor take care of the rest.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | not published |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.79 kg |
Our take: the MX 9 XT Di2 is the choice for riders who climb often: Di2 precision on the climbs makes the difference compared with the MX 9 XT (16.91 kg). The Fuel LX 9 XT (17.79 kg) is heavier and more descent-oriented.

LVR sizing advice If you are on the borderline between two sizes, the shorter one favours agility on twisty trails, the longer one composure on fast descents. Cranks of 165 or 170 mm and a dropper with 150 to 200 mm of travel depending on size.
