Trek Procaliber 9.6 Dark Star: the race hardtail in black

Built for the start line of XC races, the Trek Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 brings together an OCLV Mountain carbon frame, a 130 mm Fox Factory 34 fork and a SRAM Eagle 70 drivetrain with T-Type derailleur, for 12.38 kg in size M according to Trek. Its cranks are 170 mm up to ML, then 175 mm. The Dark Star colourway is an intense, deep black of great restraint.

Who is it for?

For the racer who competes in regional cross-country rounds and wants a hardtail that can go fast on the technical sections, where gaps open up. It also suits the demanding mountain biker looking for an understated, high-performing bike.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain and IsoBow, the carbon Procaliber's double act. Trek builds this frame from its OCLV carbon, whose layers are heat-pressed to drive out air trapped between the fibres; the Mountain version prioritises resistance to rock strikes and crashes, and remains covered by Trek's lifetime warranty. The IsoBow design routes the seatstays over the seat tube to form an arch that flexes vertically: the rear of the hardtail filters vibration better, with no pivots or wearing parts.

In short: the 9.6 is the most descent-oriented carbon Procaliber. Its Fox Factory 34 offers 130 mm, 10 more than the other models, with the GRIP2 cartridge and Kashima coating; with the SRAM Eagle 70 drivetrain, it weighs 12.38 kg in M.

At the start of a race, you often shift under full load, at the foot of a climb or coming out of a corner. The XS-1270 cassette and T-Type chain have profiled teeth and links that accept these shifts without crunching, and the derailleur, bolted to the UDH standard, is not bothered by small knocks in the bunch.

The Fox Factory 34 helps you gain time where the terrain gets rough: on rocky descents, its 130 mm absorbs impacts and keeps the front wheel on the ground, letting you brake later. We recommend servicing the seals and oil at regular intervals to keep that sensitivity.

Which Procaliber should you choose?

ModelFrameDrivetrainForkWeight (M)
Procaliber 9.5 (Fox Rhythm)OCLV Mountain, IsoBowShimano Deore 1x12Fox Rhythm 34, 120 mm12.73 kg
Procaliber 9.6OCLV Mountain, IsoBowSRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x12Fox Factory 34, 130 mm12.38 kg

Supercaliber SL 9.6 (full suspension)OCLV MountainSRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x1280 mm rear / 110 mm front12.93 kg

Our take: compared with the 9.5 with its Fox Rhythm fork (12.73 kg), the 9.6 saves 350 g and gains 10 mm of travel and a GRIP2 cartridge. The 9.7 moves to wireless GX AXS and carbon wheels for 11.38 kg.

LVR sizing advice

If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller for a bike that is agile in switchbacks, the larger for stability on fast descents. The cranks go from 170 to 175 mm in L and XL, and the stem from 50 to 80 mm from S to XL.
