For families who want a sturdy first bike rather than a toy, one that can take falls, being left out in the rain and the passing years. It is made for children eager to ride like their older siblings, and for parents who want to guide them without running bent double behind them.
Alpha Silver aluminium, a grown-up frame on a 12-inch bike. Alpha is the name Trek gives to its aluminium alloys, and the Silver version is also used on its adult Marlin mountain bikes. On this Precaliber 12, it forms a small frame that will not rust, paired with a steel fork that shrugs off falls and kerbs. The 24-tooth chainring is hidden behind a chain guard, so fingers and trousers stay well clear.

In other words: a 6.84 kg first pedal bike with no brake lever to operate, plus stabilisers and a saddle handle to help your child along. Trek recommends it for 3 and 4 year olds.
The aluminium frame will not rust, a real plus for a bike that often lives in the garage or on a patio. The steel fork takes knocks against kerbs, and the chain guard protects both curious fingers and trouser legs.
The 500 mm handlebar with its 80 mm rise keeps your child fairly upright, looking well ahead, which helps them keep their balance. The 107 mm kids' grips are sized for small hands. With the stabilisers on, they can take their first rides in a park; without them, they discover balance on a flat path.
| Model | Wheels | Child's height | Gears / brakes | Weight |

| Precaliber 20 7-speed | 20 in | 114 to 132 cm | 7 speeds, 2 V-brakes, 35 mm fork | 10.90 kg |
Our take: this Viper Red Precaliber 12 weighs 6.84 kg and fits children from 86 cm. When your child grows past 1 metre and wants hand brakes, the Precaliber 16 (8.35 kg) is the next step.
