Trek Wahoo 24 Trail Crystal White: the mountain bike for young climbers

The Trek Wahoo 24 Trail equips young mountain bikers from 1.30 to 1.50 m just like their parents: Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, a 9-speed microSHIFT Advent drivetrain and 2.20-inch Kenda Amrak tyres. Trek quotes it at 10.50 kg in one size. Crystal White is a pure, glossy white.

Who is it for?

For the child who already follows their parents on garrigue tracks, backcountry trails or easy singletrack around Béziers. It suits a motivated young rider who wants to pedal up the hills rather than push their bike.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha Silver aluminium for a real little mountain bike. On the Wahoo 24 Trail, Trek pairs this alloy with a 600 mm handlebar, a short 45 mm stem and an 11-42 cassette: the recipe of an adult mountain bike, scaled down for a child from 1.30 to 1.50 m.

What it meansMountain bike braking and gearing, 10.50 kgLighter (9.80 kg), for roads and tracksSuspension, but 11.90 kg

In other words: the Wahoo 24 Trail relies on powerful brakes and a wide gear range rather than suspension. It is still 1.40 kg lighter than the Precaliber 24 suspension.

The 11-42 cassette combined with the 30-tooth chainring gives a lowest gear in which the wheel turns less than once per pedal revolution: your child can climb a steep track seated, without wearing themselves out. The KMC X9 chain and Advent derailleur are mountain bike parts, easy to find and to maintain.

The Tektro HD-J285 hydraulic callipers on 160 mm rotors deliver powerful, progressive braking. For a child, it is above all about comfort: they control their speed with one or two fingers, even on a long descent, without their hands tensing up.

Which Wahoo should you choose?

ModelWheels / child's heightGearsBrakesWeight
Wahoo 20 Trail20 in / 1.14 to 1.32 m9Hydraulic discs9.85 kg
Wahoo 24 Path24 in / 1.30 to 1.50 m8V-brake9.80 kg

Precaliber 24 suspension24 in / 1.30 to 1.50 m8V-brake11.90 kg

Our take: compared with the Precaliber 24 suspension, the Wahoo 24 Trail is 1.40 kg lighter and swaps the V-brakes for hydraulic discs. The Precaliber keeps the advantage of a 45 mm suspension fork for children who want more comfort.

LVR sizing advice

According to Trek, this Wahoo 24 Trail suits a child from 1.30 to 1.50 m. For off-road riding, your child should be comfortable standing on the pedals with arms and legs bent. Come and try it with them in our Béziers shop.

Your questions

Why no suspension?Trek prioritises low weight; the 2.20-inch tyres already soak up stones well.
Are the brakes too powerful?Hydraulic discs are easy to modulate; we show your child how to use them.
How many gears?Nine, with a single 30-tooth chainring: just one shifter to handle.
Is white a good choice for a mountain bike?It shows the dirt, but a quick rinse makes it look new again in a few minutes.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A real 24-inch mountain bike that lets children climb and descend like the grown-ups, fully in control. Its pure white makes it look smart on the trails and in the garage alike.

Pros
+ Hydraulic disc brakes
+ 11-42 cassette for steep climbs
+ Lighter than a 24-inch suspension bike
Cons
- Rigid fork
- White shows the mud off-road

Why buy from LVR Cycles? Our Béziers workshop bleeds the hydraulic brakes, adjusts the Advent drivetrain and sets up your child's position so they ride safely on the trails.
