The LVR workshop view

Alpha Silver aluminium for a real little mountain bike. On the Wahoo 24 Trail, Trek pairs this alloy with a 600 mm handlebar, a short 45 mm stem and an 11-42 cassette: the recipe of an adult mountain bike, scaled down for a child from 1.30 to 1.50 m.

Wahoo 24 Trail (this bike)	Wahoo 24 Path	Precaliber 24 suspension
Frame	Alpha Silver 24 inch	Alpha Silver 24 inch	Alpha Silver 24 inch
Fork / brakes	Rigid, 160 mm hydraulic discs	Alloy, V-brake	45 mm suspension, V-brake
Tyres	Kenda Amrak 2.20 in	Connection Comp 2.00 in	Bontrager XR1 2.25 in
What it means	Mountain bike braking and gearing, 10.50 kg	Lighter (9.80 kg), for roads and tracks	Suspension, but 11.90 kg

In other words: the Wahoo 24 Trail relies on powerful brakes and a wide gear range rather than suspension. It is still 1.40 kg lighter than the Precaliber 24 suspension.

A wide handlebar and short stem give leverage to hold a line: your child keeps control of the front wheel on rough sections and turns easily in hairpins. The small-diameter grips allow a firm hold, even with small hands.

The Formula rear hub accepts Shimano 8, 9 or 10-speed cassettes, and the rotors use a 6-bolt fitting: adult mountain bike standards, so parts are easy to replace in the workshop. The VP-225 platform pedals offer a good contact area.

Which Wahoo should you choose?

Model	Wheels / child's height	Gears	Brakes	Weight
Wahoo 20 Trail	20 in / 1.14 to 1.32 m	9	Hydraulic discs	9.85 kg
Wahoo 24 Path	24 in / 1.30 to 1.50 m	8	V-brake	9.80 kg
Wahoo 24 Trail	24 in / 1.30 to 1.50 m	9	Hydraulic discs	10.50 kg
Precaliber 24 suspension	24 in / 1.30 to 1.50 m	8	V-brake	11.90 kg

Our take: if your child is under 1.30 m, the Wahoo 20 Trail (9.85 kg) offers the same brakes in a more compact format. The Wahoo 24 Path, at 9.80 kg, is aimed at roads and greenways.
