Trek Precaliber 20 7-speed Radioactive Red: ready for the tracks

Dazzling red and a suspension fork: the Trek Precaliber 20 7-speed Radioactive Red looks like a little mountain bike. Its 20-inch wheels, 2.25-inch Bontrager XR1 tyres and seven Shimano gears take it onto tracks as well as roads. It weighs 10.90 kg according to Trek, for children from 114 to 132 cm.

Who is it for?

For the 5 to 8 year old drawn to dirt tracks, small bumps and descents, and for parents who ride mountain bikes themselves and want to take their child on easy routes.

The LVR workshop view

An Alpha Silver frame that takes gears and suspension. On a 20-inch Alpha Silver aluminium base, Trek fits a suspension fork with 35 mm of travel, a Shimano Tourney TY300 derailleur and a seven-sprocket SunRun 14-28 freewheel. The linear-pull brakes and kickstand remain standard: this is a more complete Precaliber, designed to leave the tarmac behind.

In other words: 10.90 kg, seven gears, a fork that smooths out tracks and two hand brakes. The Precaliber for the 5 to 8 year old who wants to follow the grown-ups beyond the park.

The 35 mm suspension fork absorbs some of the shocks your child would otherwise feel in their arms. On rocky tracks like those in the garrigue around Béziers, it helps them keep the handlebar straight and stay calm. It does not turn the bike into a downhill machine: it is there for comfort.

The two linear-pull brakes, acting on alloy rims, need precise adjustment to brake well on dusty ground. Have them checked regularly, and teach your child to brake before corners rather than in them.

Which Precaliber should you choose?

Our take: all four Precaliber 20 7-speed bikes weigh 10.90 kg; this bright red is the most visible on the tracks. For real trail riding, the Wahoo 20 Trail (9.85 kg) moves up to hydraulic disc brakes and 9 speeds.

LVR sizing advice

Trek recommends this 20-inch bike from 114 to 132 cm, or ages 5 to 8 according to its data. A child at the bottom of the range benefits from keeping the saddle low for the first few weeks, then raising it as they progress. Come and try it with them at our Béziers shop.
