For the Ironman athlete who wants to manage their race to the nearest watt over 180 km and already has solid experience of the aero position. It also suits the triathlete who trains a lot alone and analyses every session.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Developed by Trek in the early 1990s, OCLV involves pressing and heating the carbon layers until every air bubble is driven out. The Speed Concept SLR 9 AXS, the best-equipped version in the range, nevertheless shares the same OCLV Series 800 frame as the SLR 7: moving up the range means a better drivetrain and wheels. Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 800 (Speed Concept SLR) | OCLV 900 (Madone SLR) | OCLV 500 (Madone SL) | |
| Level | Trek's former top-end road carbon | Trek's most advanced carbon | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Lay-up optimised for large-section aero tubes | 3D moulding, fewer fibre overlaps | Same process, slightly more material |
| Reference bike | Frame 1,522 g painted + fork 410 g | Madone SLR: frame 796 g (ML) + fork 350 g | Madone SL: frame 1,054 g (ML) + fork 363 g |
| What it means | Stiff and durable, integrated storage and IsoSpeed | Up to 20% stronger than OCLV 800 | Heavier, more affordable budget |
The key point: the top-end Speed Concept doesn't change carbon, and that makes sense. On a triathlon course, aerodynamic drag matters far more than frame weight; the extra cost of the SLR 9 AXS goes into RED AXS and RSL rims.
Over long distances, the power meter acts as a safeguard: it stops you getting carried away in the first kilometres, when your legs are fresh. Combined with the frame's integrated storage, it lets you ride self-sufficiently without losing sight of your pacing strategy.
The RSL 51 wheels offer a good compromise between aerodynamics and handling, but need attention when the sea wind blows in gusts along the coast. We check spoke tension and bearing condition at every service before an important race.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Speed Concept SLR 7 | OCLV 800 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Aeolus Pro 37 | 8.97 kg (M) |
| Speed Concept SLR 7 AXS | OCLV 800 | SRAM Force AXS + power meter | Aeolus Pro 51 | 9.02 kg (M) |
| Speed Concept SLR 9 | OCLV 800 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | Aeolus RSL 51 | n/a (frame 1,522 g) |
| Speed Concept SLR 9 AXS | OCLV 800 | SRAM RED AXS + power meter | Aeolus RSL 51 | n/a (frame 1,522 g) |
Our take: for Ironman, this SLR 9 AXS combines a power meter, storage and RED AXS; if the budget needs to stay reasonable, the SLR 7 AXS keeps the power meter and Bento box for 9.02 kg in M.
