Climbing, descending and soaking up poor surfaces: the Trek Madone SLR 9 Gen 8 does it all with an OCLV Series 900 frame, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 2x12 and Aeolus RSL 51 wheels, for 7.05 kg in size ML. Its IsoFlow seat tube adds compliance to the rear of the bike without any moving parts. The Serpentine paintwork plays on a deep dark red that lightens into a vivid red.

For the climber who links the passes of the Montagne Noire, the rider used to small country lanes with worn tarmac, or anyone who wants a race bike that is both spirited and comfortable.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV is the name of Trek's in-house process since 1992: compacting the carbon sheets at high temperature and under strong pressure so that no voids remain between them. The Madone SLR models get Series 900, the brand's most refined. The higher the number, the more optimised the lay-up and the fewer fibres are needed to reach the target stiffness: the frame and fork of this SLR 9 therefore total 1,146 g. The frame is covered for life by Trek.
| OCLV 900 (Madone SLR) | OCLV 500 (Madone SL) | OCLV 800 (Speed Concept) | |
| Level | Trek's most refined carbon | Entry-level road carbon | Trek's former top-end road carbon |
| Construction | 3D moulding, reduced ply overlaps | Same process, more generous lay-up | Proven lay-up, integration comes first |
| Reference bike | Madone SLR: painted frame 796 g (ML), fork 350 g | Madone SL: painted frame 1,054 g (ML), fork 363 g | Speed Concept SLR: painted frame 1,522 g |
| What it means | 271 g less than the SL on frame and fork; up to 20% stronger than OCLV 800 | Same aero shapes, separate bar and stem, gentler budget | Still very high-performing, reserved for triathlon at Trek |
Put simply: the OCLV 500 of the Madone SL remains an excellent carbon; it simply needs about 258 g more on the frame for equivalent stiffness. On a 7.05 kg machine like this one, that saving counts directly in the total and in the bike's lively feel out of the saddle.
IsoFlow offers 24% more vertical compliance than the Émonda: on the forest roads towards Lacaune or the Pic de Nore, the saddle filters out a good share of the vibrations. Unlike the old adjustable IsoSpeed, it needs no adjustment or maintenance, which makes life easier in the workshop.
With 36x30 as the lowest gear, long climbs call for good legs; a less seasoned sportive rider may opt for a larger cassette, as the derailleur takes 34 teeth. We work out with you the right gearing for your favourite climbs when preparing the bike.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Madone SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Aeolus Pro 51 carbon | 7.52 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | Aeolus RSL 51 carbon | 7.05 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 AXS | OCLV 900 | SRAM RED AXS E1 + power meter | Aeolus RSL 51 carbon | 7.00 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 AXS 1x | OCLV 900 | SRAM RED E1 1x12 + power meter | Aeolus RSL 37 carbon | 6.40 kg (ML) |
Our take: in the mountains, the SLR 9 at 7.05 kg rivals the SLR 9 AXS, which runs an easier 48/35. The 1x at 6.40 kg is lighter, but the gear jumps between sprockets are bigger.

LVR sizing advice The Madone is set up like a race bike: if you are hesitating, the smaller size will put you lower and more compact, the larger one more stretched out and slightly higher. There is no separate stem here: the one-piece cockpit is chosen at the same time as the frame.

| Is 36x30 enough on a climb? | For a trained rider, yes; otherwise, a cassette up to 34 teeth is possible. |
| Is IsoFlow adjustable? | No, the compliance is fixed and needs no maintenance. |
| Are 28 mm tyres enough? | Yes on rough roads; the frame takes up to 32 mm measured. |
| Can I fit mudguards? | No, this race Madone has no mounts for them. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A race bike that fears neither mountain passes nor rough roads, thanks to IsoFlow and generous tyres. The Serpentine red gives it plenty of character.
