Trek Madone SL 5 cobalt blue: for your first racing licence

OCLV Series 500 carbon frame with Full System Foil tubes, mechanical Shimano 105 2x12 groupset and Tubeless Ready alloy wheels: the Trek Madone SL 5 Gen 8 weighs 8.64 kg in size ML. It offers the same silhouette and aerodynamic profile as the Madones raced by professional teams, with mechanicals that are easy to live with. The Matte Cobalt Blue/Trek Black/Living Coral colourway blends a matt cobalt blue, black and touches of bright coral.

Who is it for?

For the young racer or the adult taking out a first club licence and discovering regional races, criteriums and timed sportives. It is also aimed at the rider who breaks or damages kit in races and wants a bike whose wear parts remain affordable.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has moulded its frames in OCLV, a carbon whose sheets are pressed and heated until all internal air pockets are eliminated. The series number reflects how refined the lay-up is: the higher it goes, the fewer fibres are needed to reach the target stiffness. The Madone SL 5 gets OCLV 500, Trek's entry point into road carbon, but with exactly the same tube shapes as the SLR models, and the Trek lifetime warranty on the frame.

What it meansSeparate bar and stem, easy to adjustOne-piece Aero RSL carbon bar/stemThe rest of the gap comes from the wheels and groupset

Put simply: on the SL 5, the difference from an SLR is measured on the scales, not in the wind. The aerodynamic profile is the same; you are simply carrying some 270 g more on the frame and fork, a gap that only a very fussy climber will notice.

In racing, reliability comes before grams: mechanical Shimano 105 shifts cleanly, with no battery to check the night before an event, and can be repaired at the roadside. The T47 threaded bottom bracket avoids the creaks typical of press-fit bottom brackets, a detail that matters when you accelerate a hundred times in a circuit race.

The frame is identical across the whole SL range: the day you move up a category, you can switch to an electronic groupset thanks to internal routing designed for both systems and the universal UDH derailleur hanger. The 28 mm tyres fitted as standard provide grip in the tight corners of town-centre circuits.

Which Madone should you choose?

Madone SL 5 ProOCLV 500Shimano 105 mechanical 2x12Aeolus Elite 48 carbon8.44 kg (ML)
Madone SL 6OCLV 500Shimano 105 Di2 2x12Aeolus Elite 50 carbon8.16 kg (ML)
Madone SL 7OCLV 500Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12Aeolus Pro 51 carbon7.87 kg (ML)

Our take: compared with the SL 6, you give up Di2 and carbon wheels, which means 480 g more on the scales. For a first racing season, that budget is often better spent on a spare pair of wheels or a power meter.

LVR sizing advice

The Madone geometry is that of a race bike: between two sizes, the smaller one gives you a more tucked position, the larger one more reach. Handlebar and stem follow the frame size.
