For the rider who loves the cols and links up the climbs of the hinterland, from the Espinouse to the Caroux, and wants an aero bike that is just as effective on the descents. It also suits anyone heading off on a mountain trip every summer.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek has made its carbon frames using the OCLV process for more than thirty years: each fibre layer is consolidated in a heated mould under pressure so that no micro-bubbles remain. The higher the series, the more optimised the lay-up and the less carbon is needed to withstand the same loads. The Madone SL 6 stays with OCLV 500, with a painted frame of 1,054 g in ML, and benefits from the Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 500 (Madone SL 6) | OCLV 900 (Madone SLR) | SL / SLR difference | |
| Level | Entry-level carbon in the road range | Trek's top-end carbon | Identical aero, only the weight changes |
| Construction | Proven OCLV process, more fibres | 3D moulding, fewer overlaps | OCLV 900 up to 20% stronger than OCLV 800 |
| Reference bike | Madone SL 6: 8.16 kg (ML) | Madone SLR 7: 7.52 kg (ML) | 0.64 kg, including 271 g on frame + fork |
| What it means | Electronics and carbon wheels at this price | One-piece Aero RSL cockpit, Ultegra Di2 | The SLR is aimed at racing and the mountains |
Put simply: with the SL 6, Trek prioritises electronics and carbon wheels over OCLV 900 carbon. For most riders, instant shifting and 50 mm rims pay off more day to day than 271 g saved on the frameset.
On the climbs, Di2 shifts even under heavy torque, without any jolt, so you don't lose your rhythm when the gradient changes. The 11-34 cassette gives you some margin on the steepest ramps, and the OCLV 500 frame is the lightest Trek has ever made for a Madone SL.
On the descents, the hydraulic disc brakes let you brake late and precisely, and the 28 mm tyres give good grip in the hairpins. The 50 mm wheels hold their speed on the rolling sections between two cols.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Madone SL 5 Pro | OCLV 500 | Shimano 105 mechanical 2x12 | Aeolus Elite 48 carbon | 8.44 kg (ML) |
| Madone SL 6 | OCLV 500 | Shimano 105 Di2 2x12 | Aeolus Elite 50 carbon | 8.16 kg (ML) |
| Madone SL 7 | OCLV 500 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12 | Aeolus Pro 51 carbon | 7.87 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12 | Aeolus Pro 51 carbon | 7.52 kg (ML) |
Our take: the SL 6 weighs 8.16 kg, 480 g less than the SL 5. For demanding climbers, the SLR 7 in OCLV 900 gets down to 7.52 kg.
