Trek Madone SLR 9 AXS 1x marbled purple: the featherweight for sportives

At 6.40 kg in size ML, the Trek Madone SLR 9 AXS 1x Gen 8 is Trek's lightest Madone. Its OCLV Series 900 frame gets a single-chainring SRAM RED E1 1x12 with power meter, a 10-36 cassette and shallow-rim Aeolus RSL 37 wheels. The Purple Phaze/Amethyst Marble paintwork unfolds a pearlescent purple marbled with amethyst veins.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. For its lightest Madone, Trek did not invent a new frame: it uses the same OCLV Series 900 structure as the other SLR models, and the extra grams disappear elsewhere. The process, used since 1992, involves pressing the carbon plies under heat until the micro-bubbles are driven out; a higher series number reflects a more efficient layup, so less material for the same strength. The painted frame weighs 796 g in ML and is still covered for life.

What it means271 g less than the SL on frame and fork; up to 20% stronger than OCLV 800Same aero shapes, separate bar and stem, gentler budgetStill very high-performing, reserved for triathlon at Trek

Put simply: with the same frame, the 600 g separating this 1x from the double-chainring SLR 9 AXS come from the single-chainring drivetrain, shallower wheels and lighter tyres. It is a climber's build on a familiar base, not a different carbon.

Sportives are not subject to the UCI minimum weight: this is where this Madone shows its full potential. In a mountain event, the 600 g saved compared with the SLR 9 AXS 2x12 are felt every time you accelerate on a gradient, and the 10-36 cassette offers easy gearing on the steepest slopes.

The Aeolus RSL 37 rims, shallower than the 51 mm of the other SLR models, catch less crosswind: an advantage on the ridges of the Espinouse when the tramontane blows in gusts. As for braking, Trek's spec sheet for this colour lists SRAM RED AXS E1 hydraulic callipers on 160 mm rotors.

Which Madone should you choose?

Our take: for a mountain sportive, the 1x at 6.40 kg is the lightest; the SLR 9 AXS at 7.00 kg keeps two chainrings and more versatility. The ICON editions, at 6.90 kg, go for 58 mm rims.

LVR sizing advice

With a single chainring, cadence matters even more: crank length follows the size, so bear it in mind if you are torn between two frames. If in doubt, the smaller size gives a more aggressive position, the larger one more stability on descents.

Your questions

Banned from sportives? No, these events do not impose the UCI minimum weight.
37 mm rims and wind?Less sensitive to crosswinds than deeper rims.
Adding a front derailleur? The frame allows it; it is a real job, to be assessed in the workshop.
Is the marbled finish unique? Each marbling varies slightly, which makes every frame one of a kind.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The lightest bike in the Madone range, perfectly at home in mountain sportives. Its marbled purple completes a package that is already very exclusive.

Pros
+ 6.40 kg, the lightest Madone
+ Shallow rims less sensitive to wind
+ Marbled pearlescent purple
Cons
- Not UCI compliant without ballast
- Only one chainring on the flat
