The Trek Émonda ALR 5 is a race bike with an Alpha Series 300 aluminium frame built using Invisible Weld technology, paired with a full-carbon fork and Shimano 105 2x12, for 9.17 kg in size 56. Its H1.5 race geometry puts the rider lower than on a Domane, for lively, precise handling in the bunch. Its Slate Prismatic/Black Prismatic Fade colourway shifts from an iridescent slate grey to a deep black.

For the young racer or club rider who wants a responsive bike without moving to carbon, the sportive rider who enjoys a lively feel, or the triathlete looking for a light road bike for training. It suits riders who accept a more aggressive position in exchange for agility.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Émonda ALR uses Alpha Series 300, the lightest aluminium in the Trek range, joined with Invisible Weld technology: the welds are smoothed so well that the frame passes for carbon. The tubes have a truncated Kammtail profile and the fork is entirely carbon. This is aluminium designed for speed, whereas the Alpha 100 of the Domane AL focuses first on versatility.
| Alpha 300 (Émonda ALR) | Alpha 100 (Domane AL) | OCLV 500 carbon (Domane SL) | |
| Level | Trek's lightest aluminium | The Domane AL aluminium | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Invisible Weld, Kammtail tubes | Welded tubes, plenty of mounts | Layers compacted under heat and pressure |
| Reference bike | Émonda ALR 5: 9.17 kg (size 56) | Domane AL 5: 9.80 kg (size 56) | Domane SL 5 Gen 5: 8.84 kg (size ML) |
| What it means | Lively and light, race geometry, 28 mm tyres max | Heavier, but mudguards and wider tyres | Lighter, Trek lifetime warranty on the frame |
Put simply: this frame is all about responsiveness and clean lines, at the cost of winter mounts and wide tyres. Against the carbon Domane SL 5 (8.84 kg in ML), the Émonda ALR 5 is heavier (9.17 kg in 56) but keeps a more aggressive geometry.
H1.5 geometry sits between the very low position of pro race bikes and the more upright position of the Domane: it remains usable for a reasonably flexible amateur rider. Hydraulic disc brakes need less effort at the lever than cable callipers and give better modulation on technical descents.
When accelerating out of corners in regional races or on the climbs of the Col de Fontjun or the Pic de Nore, its stiffness and modest weight make the difference. On the other hand, the Trek spec sheet does not mention mudguard mounts and tyre clearance stops at 28 mm: this is a fair-weather, tarmac bike.
| Model | Material | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Domane AL 4 | Alpha 100 | Shimano Tiagra 2x11 | Paradigm 23 alloy | 10.10 kg (56) |
| Domane AL 5 | Alpha 100 | Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical | Paradigm 23 alloy | 9.80 kg (56) |
| Émonda ALR 5 | Alpha 300 | Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical | n/a | 9.17 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 5 Gen 5 | OCLV 500 carbon | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg (ML) |
Our take: the Émonda ALR 5 weighs 630 g less than the Domane AL 5 in size 56 with the same 105, at the cost of mudguards and wide tyres. The carbon Domane SL 5, at 8.84 kg in ML, puts comfort ahead of a race position.

LVR sizing advice The race geometry is lower than a Domane: between two sizes, the smaller one keeps the bar within reach without bending your back too much. Handlebar and stem change with the size.

| Mudguards in winter? | Not provided according to the Trek spec sheet: choose a Domane AL for winter. |
