The art of designing a durable hub with minimal clearance lies in properly preloading the bearings. Most bicycle hubs are equipped with radial bearings, which are sensitive to lateral forces. Hubs with a clearance adjustment system generally have a fine thread. They allow precise clearance adjustment, but can also generate high axial forces.
