Trek Domane+ SLR 7 Metallic Red Smoke: climbing the hinterland's cols at your own pace

Offered in 54 and 56, this Trek Domane+ SLR 7 Metallic Red Smoke/Red Carbon Smoke is designed for the mountains: 60 Nm TQ HPR60 motor, 360 Wh battery, Ultegra Di2 2x12 with an 11-34 cassette and an OCLV Series 800 carbon frame with IsoSpeed. It weighs 12.65 kg in size 56 according to Trek. Its paintwork pairs a smoky metallic red with a darker, deeper red.

Who is it for?

For the amateur climber who wants to take on the cols of the Caroux, the Espinouse or the Montagne Noire without dreading the final kilometres, and for anyone coming back from a break who wants to get back to the big loops.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has moulded its OCLV frames by pressing the carbon plies at high temperature to eliminate voids; the Series 800 of this Domane+ thus achieves good stiffness with little material. The frame hides the TQ HPR60 at the bottom bracket, keeps the rear IsoSpeed and takes mudguards thanks to its mounts. Like all OCLV frames, it benefits from Trek's lifetime warranty.

In short: this version of the SLR 7 gets the 60 Nm TQ HPR60 motor, 10 Nm more than the HPR50 series, with Ultegra Di2 2x12, Aeolus Pro 37 wheels and 32 mm Kwaremont RSL tyres in 320 tpi. It is the best balance in the SLR range between spec and torque.

On a long climb, the 34-tooth sprocket of the Ultegra Di2 combined with the 60 Nm of the TQ HPR60 lets you keep a smooth cadence where you would be out of the saddle on a conventional bike. The motor follows your pedalling without any jerkiness, and you manage the 360 Wh battery by choosing the assist level to suit the gradient.

On the descent, 160 mm rotors front and rear and 32 mm tyres give you confidence through the hairpins. The RCS Pro stem is matched to the size, 90 mm in 54 and 100 mm in 56, and the 42 cm handlebar is common to both sizes. Above 25 km/h, the assist leaves you to your own legs.

Which Domane+ should you choose?

Our take: in the mountains, the SLR 7 HPR60 brings 10 Nm more than the SLR 6 HPR50 (12.85 kg in 56) while weighing 200 g less. The Domane+ SL 7 AXS (11.47 kg in ML) is lighter, but its HPR40 is limited to 40 Nm.
