Trek Domane+ SL 9 AXS Matte Deep Smoke: a high-end e-bike for riding all year round

The Trek Domane+ SL 9 AXS Gen 5 brings together the best of the Domane+ SL range: a wireless SRAM RED XPLR eTap AXS groupset, Aeolus RSL 37 carbon wheels, a Verse Short Pro saddle with carbon rails, a TQ HPR40 motor and a 360 Wh battery in an OCLV Series 500 carbon frame. Trek quotes 11.00 kg in size ML. Matte Deep Smoke dresses the bike in a very understated matt anthracite grey.

For the rider who rides in every season, from spring in the Hauts Cantons to winter rides in dry weather, and wants a high-end bike that is easy to live with day to day.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. The Domane+ SL 9 AXS keeps the OCLV Series 500 carbon of the other Domane+ SL models: here, the weight saving comes from the spec, Aeolus RSL 37 wheels and a RED groupset, rather than from a more expensive carbon. The process remains Trek's own, layers compacted under pressure and heat to avoid any internal flaws, with a lifetime warranty on the frame.

In short: the SL 9 AXS is the lightest Domane+ SL, at 11.00 kg in ML, and the only one to get the SRAM RED XPLR eTap AXS drivetrain. The frame and HPR40 motor are those of the SL 6 and SL 7: what you pay for here is Aeolus RSL wheels and a RED groupset.

Wireless SRAM RED has no cables or housings to replace: you simply recharge the AXS system batteries and update it from time to time. On the motor side, TQ updates are done in the workshop; we apply them at every service, along with a check of the 360 Wh battery.

In winter, the mudguard mounts on the frame and fork let you ride on wet roads without getting filthy, and the 35 mm tubeless-ready Kwaremont RSL tyres can be run without tubes to limit punctures. Store the battery somewhere temperate during periods when you are not riding.

Our take: the SL 9 AXS (11.00 kg in ML) and the SL 7 AXS (11.47 kg) share the frame, motor and mounts; the difference lies in the groupset and wheels. If you ride a lot in winter, reliability counts as much as the 470 g difference.

LVR sizing advice

The Domane+ SL comes in XS to XL. Trek puts the ML between 173 and 179 cm and the L between 179 and 188 cm; handlebar width (36 to 42 cm) and stem length (80 to 120 mm) change with the size. If you are between two sizes, a measurement in store will settle it.

How do you look after RED AXS?	Recharge the derailleur battery and run the updates; we take care of it at service time.
Can the motor be updated?	Yes, TQ updates are carried out in our workshop.
Can you ride in the rain?	Yes, with mudguards on the dedicated mounts, and a gentle clean afterwards.
Does the matt finish scratch?	It cleans with soapy water; avoid polishing products.
