The LVR workshop view

The belt-drive Lowstep that goes the distance. Here Trek pairs the Alpha Platinum step-through frame, the Gates CDX belt and the Shimano Nexus C7000 5-speed hub with an 800 Wh PowerTube. You get the low step-over, the grease-free drivetrain and a large energy reserve, with mudguards, an integrated rack and a Pletscher Comp Flex 40 kickstand.

In short: 260 Wh more than the Nexus 540 Wh Lowstep for an extra 0.90 kg according to Trek (31.50 kg versus 30.60 kg in M). The right choice when journeys get longer or you ride every day without wanting to charge every evening.

The big 800 Wh battery is an ideal match for a maintenance-free drivetrain: you ride a lot, charge rarely and never grease anything. The step-through frame makes frequent stops easy, as well as getting on with a rucksack or a tall pannier.

The Nexus C7000 hub offers 5 gears inside a sealed shell. With the 32-tooth sprocket of the Gates CDX belt and 75 Nm of assistance, pulling away stays easy even when loaded, and you quickly reach cruising speed on the long straight roads of the plain.

Our take: at 31.50 kg in M, this Nexus 5 800 Wh Lowstep weighs 0.20 kg less than the derailleur-equipped R9 800 Wh. The Enviolo 800 Wh Lowstep (32.50 kg) moves to continuously variable gearing.

LVR sizing advice

You get onto the Lowstep frame from the front, without lifting your leg: the size is chosen mainly on saddle height and reach. Trek's ranges overlap between M and L (170 to 173 cm); in that case, the smaller size gives a more upright position and the larger one more room for long rides. The height-adjustable stem then fine-tunes the position.
