Trek Inbound+ 2 R8 Buff Beige: eight gears for the hilltop districts of Béziers

The straight-frame Trek Inbound+ 2 R8 adds an eight-speed Shimano ESSA drivetrain to the 45 Nm Bosch hub motor. A 360 Wh PowerTube battery, 50 mm Bontrager Girona Comp tyres and full equipment (mudguards, rack, kickstand): it weighs 21.50 kg in size L according to Trek. Buff Beige is a pale, bright sandy beige that gives the bike a subtle retro style.

Who is it for?

For anyone living on the heights of Béziers, near Saint-Nazaire cathedral or in the hilly neighbourhoods, who wants the right gear for every street. It will also suit riders who like to stay in control of their effort and choose their gear rather than leave everything to the motor.

Eight Shimano ESSA gears, just what you need. ESSA is a Shimano drivetrain designed for city and leisure bikes: eight gears, an easy-to-adjust U2000 derailleur and a single 42-tooth chainring. On the Inbound+ 2 R8, it's added to the Bosch motor in the rear wheel and lets you choose your effort according to the gradient, something a single-speed can't do. In short: the Inbound+ 2 R8 keeps the 360 Wh battery of the belt-drive version but replaces the single speed with eight Shimano gears. It weighs 21.50 kg in L, 800 g more than the Inbound+ 2 B, and becomes far more at ease as soon as the road climbs.

On a climb, the hub motor performs best when you keep a steady cadence. That's where the eight gears come in: you shift down a few gears, your legs spin faster, and the assistance takes over without you straining. On the flat, you shift back up until 25 km/h, the speed at which the assistance fades out.

The Girona Comp tyres have a puncture-protection layer under the tread and a reflective strip on the sidewall: useful in town, where glass and debris litter the edges of the road. The KMC Z8 chain and ESSA derailleur need the usual care, cleaning and lubrication, which we're happy to show you.

Our take: the eight gears add 800 g compared with the Inbound+ 2 B (20.70 kg in L) with the same battery. For the same hills but longer journeys, the R10 offers 600 Wh and ten gears for 22.60 kg.

LVR sizing advice

In the straight frame, the Inbound+ 2 R8 comes in M, L and XL, from 155 to 203 cm. The M (70 mm stem) gives an upright, reassuring position in traffic; the L and XL (110 mm stem) suit taller riders who ride for longer.
