Trek Inbound+ 2 R8 Desert Sage: the Passa Païs greenway in eight gears

Greyish sage green and a straight frame: the Trek Inbound+ 2 R8 Desert Sage has the look of a modern leisure bike. A 45 Nm Bosch motor integrated into the rear hub, a 360 Wh PowerTube battery, an eight-speed Shimano ESSA drivetrain and 50 mm Girona Comp tyres make a versatile package. Who is it for?

For half-day rides on the Passa Païs greenway, towards the first villages of the Haut-Languedoc, and the rest of the week for getting around town. It will appeal to anyone who wants a well-balanced e-bike that can go from cobbles to hard-packed tracks.

The LVR workshop view

Eight Shimano ESSA gears, just what you need. ESSA is a Shimano drivetrain designed for city and leisure bikes: eight gears, an easy-to-adjust U2000 derailleur and a single 42-tooth chainring. On the Inbound+ 2 R8, it's added to the Bosch motor in the rear wheel and lets you choose your effort according to the gradient, something a single-speed can't do. In short: the Inbound+ 2 R8 keeps the 360 Wh battery of the belt-drive version but replaces the single speed with eight Shimano gears. It weighs 21.50 kg in L, 800 g more than the Inbound+ 2 B, and becomes far more at ease as soon as the road climbs.

The greenway follows a former railway line: the gradient is steady but long in places. The eight gears let you find the ratio that keeps a smooth cadence, the one where the Bosch hub motor gives effective assistance. Above 25 km/h, it steps back, and the bike rolls freely downhill.

The 50 mm tyres offer generous air volume: less vibration on rough surfaces, more stability on gravelly sections. The Kovee double-wall Tubeless Ready rims accept a tubeless setup, which we can do in the workshop to reduce punctures on tracks.

Our take: this R8 brings eight gears for 800 g more than the Inbound+ 2 B (20.70 kg). For full-day greenway rides, the R10 and its 600 Wh (22.60 kg) leave more margin between charges.

LVR sizing advice

In the straight frame, the Inbound+ 2 R8 comes in M, L and XL, from 155 to 203 cm. The M (70 mm stem) gives an upright, reassuring position in traffic; the L and XL (110 mm stem) suit taller riders who ride for longer.
