In Dark Star, a deep, plain black, the Trek Inbound+ 2 B 540 is an understated electric city bike, built to ride all year round. A straight Alpha Smooth aluminium frame, a Bosch rear hub motor, a Gates belt and a 540 Wh PowerTube battery make a reliable base. It weighs 21.60 kg in size L according to Trek.

Who is it for?

For the everyday rider who rides in all weathers, from scorching summers to rainy November mornings, and expects the bike to start every day without fail. It will appeal to anyone who values reliability and discretion.

Still belt drive, now with 540 Wh. The Inbound+ 2 B 540 follows the belt-drive Inbound+ formula, a single-speed Gates Sidetrack drivetrain and a Bosch motor integrated into the rear hub, but carries a 540 Wh PowerTube battery instead of 360 Wh. Charges are further apart, with no change to the cleanliness or silence of the drivetrain. Straight Alpha Smooth aluminium frame.

In short: 180 Wh more than the Inbound+ 2 B for an extra 900 g (21.60 kg in L). If you like the idea of a maintenance-free belt but ride beyond the town centre, this is the version to go for.

The Gates belt doesn't care about rain, dust or salt: it doesn't rust and needs no oil. For a bike ridden all year round, that's a real time-saver on maintenance. The motor's assistance cuts out above 25 km/h, in line with e-bike regulations.

In summer, avoid leaving the battery in direct sunlight on the parked bike; in winter, bring it indoors if it's freezing. The 540 Wh PowerTube comes out of the frame and locks with a key: parked on the street, the bike keeps its battery safe from prying hands. A D-lock and insurance are still recommended.

Our take: this black B 540 weighs 900 g more than the Inbound+ 2 B (20.70 kg in L) for 180 Wh more. Compared with the R10 (22.60 kg), it saves 1 kg but does without the ten gears.

LVR sizing advice

Straight frame in M (155 to 173 cm), L (170 to 185 cm) and XL (185 to 203 cm). As the battery weighs a little more than on the 360 Wh version, a size that lets you put a foot down easily makes stops at the lights more relaxed.
