Who is it for?

For the cyclist who likes to leave the beaten track and take a gravel path in the middle of a ride, the rider who wants a road bike capable of small adventures, or the strong rider who wants a simple drivetrain. The 10-46 cassette keeps a gear for every gradient, even on steep tracks.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Developed by Trek back in 1992, OCLV involves densifying the fibre sheets in a heated, pressurised mould so that no bubbles remain at the heart of the structure. The series shown measures the degree of optimisation: a higher number means less carbon is needed to achieve the same strength. The American manufacturer guarantees its OCLV frames for life.

ConstructionRobust layup, slightly more materialRigid 3D moulding, fewer fibre overlaps
Gen 5 Domane frameapprox. 1,055 gapprox. 835 g (unpainted, size ML)
What it meansTough, comfortable frame, more affordable priceAbout 220 g less on the frame; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800

OCLV 500 is the right compromise here: a frame that copes with tracks and gravel without losing the lightness of carbon. The weight difference with OCLV 900 remains modest given the mixed use.

The single chainring does away with the front derailleur: fewer parts, fewer adjustments, and a chain that stays put on rough tracks. The 10-46 cassette covers a very wide range, from 44x10 on the flat to 44x46 for the steepest climbs.

On the tracks of the Minervois or the Montagne Noire, 35 mm tyres work well, and you can go up to 40 mm. The 51 mm carbon wheels hold momentum on the road but need a little care in strong winds.

Which Domane should you choose?

Our take: compared with the SL 6 AXS, the SL 7 AXS 1x saves 500 g and gains a power meter, but goes single-ring. The SLR 7 weighs 480 g less, with an OCLV 900 frame and a Shimano 2x12 drivetrain.

LVR sizing advice

If you plan to ride on gravel tracks, a fairly compact size will give you more control. Cranks, handlebar and stem follow the frame size.
