Trek Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2 Sedona Red: fast, colourful carbon

Designed to go fast everywhere, the Gen 4 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2 combines an OCLV Mountain carbon frame, a Shimano XT Di2 drivetrain and triple-compound Bontrager RSL tyres, weighing 14.00 kg in size M. It offers 120 mm of rear travel and 130 mm at the front, with a dropper post that reaches 200 mm in L and XL. Its Matte Sedona Red/Pennyflake paint combines a matt earth red with coppery orange highlights, like the soils of the Salagou.

Who is it for?

For the tall, sporty rider who wants a bike that is fast on the link sections and safe on the descents, with no compromise on the dropper post. It will also appeal to riders on regional MTB sportives who like to ride at the front and finish fresh.

OCLV Mountain carbon, the happy medium. The Top Fuel 9.8 is the first carbon model of the 4th generation. The OCLV Mountain layup is designed to withstand mountain bike impacts, and the frame keeps everything that makes a Top Fuel: internal storage, four-position Mino Link and ABP pivot. Put simply: a round 14 kg in size M, for a build that does not cut corners on reliability. Moving to carbon plus Di2 saves you 580 g over the aluminium Top Fuel 8.

The Gunnison RSL front and Montrose RSL rear tyres use three compounds: a fast-rolling centre tread and softer side knobs for grip in corners. On the red earth and stones of the Salagou, it is the ideal compromise between efficiency and grip.

The 200 mm Line Dropper post in L and XL lets you drop the saddle completely out of the way on steep sections, something bikes in this category often lack. The carbon frame keeps the internal storage for an inner tube and tools, handy on long rides without a pack.

Our take: with the same frame, the 9.9 XTR Di2 saves 900 g thanks to its components. Compared with the aluminium Top Fuel 8, this 9.8 offers electronics, RSL tyres and 580 g less.

LVR sizing advice

From S to XL: the S rolls on 27.5-inch wheels, the other sizes on 29. The dropper post grows with the frame, from 100 mm in S up to 200 mm in L and XL; a real bonus for tall riders.

A 200 mm post in L?	Yes, in L and XL; 170 mm in M and ML, 100 mm in S.
Do the RSL tyres wear quickly?	The soft side compound wears a little faster; we check wear at every service.
Di2 updates?	We update the firmware in the workshop and configure the controls to your liking.
What about the red and orange paint?	Matte Sedona Red/Pennyflake is matt with copper flakes; clean it gently.
