For riders taking part in organised mountain bike rides and raids in the region, covering 40 to 60 km routes with great technical descents. They want a bike that is reliable from start to finish and makes up for rider fatigue at the end of the route.
OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV carbon comes from compacting the fibre layers to eliminate internal air bubbles, the weak points of a frame. For its mountain bikes, Trek uses the OCLV Mountain variant, whose layup is calibrated to withstand rocks and jumps. The Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 benefits from it with guided internal cable routing, even cleaner with a wireless derailleur, and Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel MX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel MX 9) | Carbon Fuel EX / LX | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon, tuned for impacts | Trek's most advanced aluminium | Same Gen 7 Fuel platform |
| Construction | Plies compacted under heat and pressure | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Identical OCLV Mountain carbon |
| Gen 7 Fuel frameset (M) | 3.31 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 4.95 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 3.31 kg for the EX |
| What it means | Around 1.6 kg less on the frame, lifetime warranty | Heavier, gentler on the budget | 145 / 150 mm (EX) or 160 / 170 mm (LX) |
Put simply: the frame and suspension are those of the 9.8 XT. The difference lies in the wireless XT Di2 M8250 derailleur with programmable shifting: a gain in everyday convenience and an adjustment that no longer drifts, not more advanced suspension.
At the end of a long ride, it is clear-headedness that drops: the 4-piston Shimano XT M8220 brakes, with 203 and 180 mm rotors, need little lever effort, which eases the strain on your forearms on the last descent. Meanwhile, Di2 guarantees an accurate shift even when you press the button a little late.
The Maxxis tyres form a classic all-mountain pairing: Assegai in soft MaxxGrip compound up front for cornering grip, Minion DHR II in MaxxTerra at the rear for braking and longevity. Set up tubeless with their EXO+ casing, they limit punctures, the dread of every raid participant.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | not disclosed |
| Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 160 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | not published |
| Fuel MX 9.9 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 170 mm | Wireless SRAM X0 AXS | not disclosed |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 160 / 170 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 15.97 kg |
Our take: with identical Fox suspension, the 9.8 XT does the same job with a cable derailleur. The 9.9 X0 AXS goes up to 170 mm up front; the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 (15.97 kg in M) shares the Di2 drivetrain and extends travel by 10 mm at each wheel.

LVR sizing advice Torn between two sizes: the shorter one for a lively bike that is easy to place, the longer one if you mainly ride fast on steep slopes. Here, only the dropper post travel varies from one size to another.

| Suitable for 60 km raids? | Yes, its suspension and 51-tooth sprocket make long routes accessible. |
| Which replacement tyres? | The Assegai front and DHR II rear pairing remains a good base; we advise according to the season. |
| Do the brakes need bleeding often? | Regular bleeding according to use keeps a firm lever; we do it in our workshop. |
| Is the chameleon green discreet? | Not really: its colour-shifting tints catch the eye, especially in the sun. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict The ideal carbon Fuel MX for linking mountain bike events and demanding raids, with a wireless drivetrain and brakes that spare the rider. Its glossy chameleon green does not go unnoticed on the start line.
