For the mountain biker who already rides trail and feels their bike reaching its limits as soon as the descent gets steeper, or for the rider who wants a single mountain bike able to complete a big loop in the Caroux and then ride the bike park. It is offered here in sizes M and L.
Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the pinnacle of Trek alloy. Trek grades its aluminium in three tiers: Alpha Silver on the Marlin, Alpha Platinum above it, and Alpha NEXT Platinum, reserved for the 7th generation of the Fuel. It is the latter that forms the base of the Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90. On the Fuel EX of the same generation, the alloy frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, against 3.31 kg for the carbon version: the gap is real, but a well-made alloy frame takes rocks and crashes without leaving you worrying about the slightest invisible crack.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | High-end alloy, one step below NEXT |
| Designed to | Take knocks at a sensible cost | Save weight, resist impacts | Aluminium enduro frames |
| Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset (M) | 4.95 kg | 3.31 kg | not applicable |
| What it means | Heavier, but unbothered by small knocks | 1.64 kg less on the frameset | Previous aluminium generation |
Put simply: with the same drivetrain, this alloy Fuel MX amounts to a complete bike capable of the same descents as the carbon 9.8. The extra grams are felt mainly on long climbs; on descents, the stability of a slightly heavier frame is no bad thing.
Fox Factory suspension is the heart of this build: the GRIP X2 damper in the 36 fork separates high- and low-speed compression and rebound adjustments, and the Float X shock offers a wide operating range. In the workshop, we always start with sag and rebound; they are what makes the difference in rock gardens.
Choosing a mechanical Eagle 90 drivetrain is reassuring for intensive use: no battery to monitor, parts that are easy to find and cable adjustment anyone can manage. The 10-52 cassette paired with the 30-tooth chainring gives you enough to climb the steepest forest tracks while staying seated.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 145 / 150 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.58 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 (Fox) | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel MX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 150 / 160 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 16.91 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | 160 / 170 mm | SRAM Eagle 90 1x12 | 17.38 kg |
Our take: compared with the Fuel EX 9 Eagle 90 (16.58 kg), this MX adds 5 mm at the rear and 10 mm at the front for 200 g more. The Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 moves to 160/170 mm but weighs 17.38 kg: it is an enduro bike, less at ease on climbs.

LVR sizing advice Hesitating between two sizes: the smaller one makes the bike playful in tight corners, the larger one makes it more composed at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size, from 150 to 200 mm.

| Versatile enough for trail riding? | Yes, with 30x52 gearing and a 170 to 200 mm dropper post, long loops remain within reach. |
| Why two wheel sizes? | The 29-inch front rolls over obstacles better, the 27.5 rear makes the bike more playful. |
| Which sizes are available? | This version is offered in M and L; we check the size with you in store. |
| Does the speckled grey show marks? | No, the black splatters hide small scratches and dust well. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A no-frills Fuel MX whose Fox Factory suspension clearly plays in the category above. Its black-speckled grey stays discreet and ages well.
